This is just symptomatic of the corporatism and greediness that has grown to ruin the once-rootsy Long Beach Blues Festival. I grew up in the golden years of the festival hearing the likes of Albert King, BB King, Etta James, James Cotton,. Bobby Bland...the list goes on and on. The ugly power struggles and politics between Bernie Pearl and Gary 'Saggyman' Wagner and a host of other self-centered jerks it is no wonder the festival is dead. But actually it died about 15 years ago with VIP areas, super VIP areas, rude rude rude security, a bunch of people trying to make a years worth of profits in one Labor Day Weekend. Sad, sad, sad. Hopefully KJazz can keep its unique and valuable jazz programing isolated from the disaster that the Blues Festival came to be. RIP Long Beach Blues Festival.

I have been a long time listener to KJAZZ, blues shows, and in my opinion, the fare put forth by Mr. Wagner is very limited to a particular genre of blues artists. Indeed, when one listens, the decline of the LB Blues Festival can be mirrored in the discontinuence of the San Francisco Blues Festival,(apparently for financial reasons in that case). Also, what I have noticed in blues audiences in general over the last few years is the lack of black audience attendance, and the "yuppification" of the audiences.

KLON, which is now KKJZ once broadcast a bluegrass music format. It held one of its donation campaigns while playing bluegrass music for several days or weeks. After tricking as many bluegrass music lovers as possible into making donations, and after making the promise to continue broadcasting bluegrass music, it quit broadcasting bluegrass and switched to the current jazz music format. I never donated again. As a State College broadcaster, I presume hard working overburdened California taxpayers are now being forced to pick up the tab.

KLON made the change to KKJZ in 2002 for financial reasons from what i read in the public file. ANd I don't think KJazz neede to do much tricking anyway... i think the bluegrass fans were all high off grass or drunk on moonshine.

I do however support and contineu to support the radi ostation i listen to the most. it only seems fair and honest!
