Ask the Tornillo superintindent what the district's SAT scorces look like. Or where the district was ranked on how college ready the seniors were. The truth is all that district does is have the core teachers teach the TAKS test every day. If its' not on the TAKS-its' not taught, in every other category Tornillo ranks next to last or last among EP county schools. Check the number of teachers who quit or are forced to resign cause their TAKS scores were considered not high enough by the superintindent or the campus principal. On some campuses (middle & high school) teachers are told repeatedly throughout the yr., if your scores are not high, you will be fired or asked to resign. Most work in fear of losing their positions, Vranish is a ego-manic ass who the school board is afraid of & most of town wants him out. In fact, the board president hasn't even lived in Tornillo for 2 yrs. No other districts take Tornillo's scores seriously cause they know what Vranish is about & what a nutcase he is. Is Socorro or Ysleta asking him to apply? I don't think so,check his past record as a super. As for the trips, most of the money comes from grants not the district itself. Vranish has threatened to stop all trips if a certain community member is elected to the board next. NOV. & a current member is reelected then he loses control of his puppet board which that is all that it is.

I heard that Vranish was run out of East Texas by TSTA.

Wow, pretty harsh stuff you are obviously upset! But, let me agree with you that I am a person with many shortcomings, mistakes and disappointments in life, and far from perfect. If it makes you feel good to call me a nutcase, an egomaniac, loser, whatever, you have my full support. You may include that I am also overweight, balding, and dress with no style. I am well aware that there are so many who are better than me.
Unfortunately, you didn't get much else right - and many people read these forums so some corrections and clarifications are needed.
In fact I am extremely grateful to this community for my job. Because of the people of Tornillo, and the taxes they pay, I am able to feed my family and pay my bills. More importantly, I get to work with and for their wonderful children. These are truly blessings in my view and I never take this position, or the fact that the citizens who I serve allow me here, for granted.
The story linked to this forum was about the success of Tornillos instructional staff and the students. Since we all know that I don't teach a single class, let us agree that the credit should be directed to those who accomplished our "Recognized" rating.
We do need to improve our SAT performance and the Board has included this parameter in my appraisal document; this was a good point! But, we work on much more academically than TAKS. We rank high in many areas academically and in other areas such as financial health, etc. on the state AEIS performance report a public document easily found online.
Our employment retention decisions are made by analyzing each teacher's student growth. We understand that teachers have no control over the students they get on day-one; only what they do with them during the academic year. If any teacher demonstrates a two-year pattern of lowering kids' scores from their incoming performance we DO ask them to leave. Whether the student passes the TAKS or not is irrelevant in this context, students growth from one year to the next is the issue. We do not consider a person's social circle or connection to "important people" when making employment decisions. This was done in "Old Tornillo," before my arrival, which is why the state was set to take the district over after three consecutive years of "Low Performing" ratings. It should be noted that our teacher turnover is less than 10% for two consecutive years.
The trips are paid for by the district, not grants. This program has been duplicated in at least two other Texas school districts now. Our very supportive, wonderful board allows these trips when they vote in the districts budget.
The Board adopts a set of goals every year that will comprise my appraisal. These goals are then distributed to the staff and community so all will know what the Trustees expectations of me are - hardly the actions of "puppets."
This community has supported our efforts at every election, including last November's tax increase, when no other school entity won their election that evening. Tornillo also had the highest voter turnout, per capita, of any precinct in the county during that election.
In closing, I am very proud of this community and its schools. Should the day come the citizens decide to run me out I will leave with an incredible gratitude for the opportunity to have served these terrific people and their kids.
I signed my real name, didnt catch yours....

Often we do not sign our names for fear of relatiation.... you know what I mean so do not kid youself. I was one of those asked to resign for not spoon feeding TAKS "SOPA" to the kids every day. Forgive me if I thought the the 3 R's were more important.
At any rate, we all know that it isn't over till the lady sings....(you know) the AYP ratings. It will be interesting to see where some of the schools end up including Tornillo and Bowie. Don't worry Ysleta and Socorro, you have some as well.

I know how frustrating it is to read the drivel put forth by these lowlife Monday morning quarterbacks who stand on the sidelines and toss insults instead of getting in the game and making a difference in the lives of kids. I respect your response and especially your right TO respond. However, with the deepest respect, don't lower yourself to the level of these malcontents that profess to know all about public education. Life is too short for this type of people to cause you to pay attention. Please know that your district is doing a fantastic job of educating children. Be secure in the fact that true educators recognize what you've done in Tornillo. As far as the comments in this weblog, please consider the source and press on in making a difference in the lives of your students.
