I watched it because of Steve Carell. I liked it because I, unlike the critic here seem to get the point of it. He was happily married with 3 young girls. He was a good dad with an advise column. When his wife died, he was left alone to raise his daughters. He loved his wife and after she passed he became more and more protective of his daughters. He was afraid of loosing them. When Marie came in at the cabin it was too late to confess because of what he had said to his brothers. It would have made her look very bad, giving her phone number to a guy she met at a book store on her way to meet the family of her new boyfriend. Dan didn't want to make trouble or hurt anyone. He is said to have taken care of everyone but himself. He ends up fighting his own feelings, which distracts him, leading to unusual behavior and reckless driving. It's almost Shakespear. A man and woman meat by chance and fall in love, only to be kept apart by unforeseen circumstances. It starts with "Romeo and Juliet" and ends with a "Midsummer Nights Dream". If you go expecting an over the top comedy like 40 year old virgin then expect disappointment. It's first and foremost a love story. If your a bitter and spiteful person that likes to see families torn apart in dark comedies then then please don't watch, but if you can actually relate to real people, and not just over the top characters that could never exist, then please give it a chance.
