Black: "Another Attack Would Be a Big Advantage for McCain"

Another instance of foot-in-mouth disease for a politician, or at least for one of his advisors. Fortune is running an article called "The Evolution of John McCain." But Charlie Black, McCain's chief advisor, said the following in the article:

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an "unfortunate event." "But his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us." As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. "Certainly it would be a big advantage to him," says Black.

what an incredibly heartless man! Mr.Black. I guess one has to admire his candor! I am so glad certain people were never Democrats -- how shameful it would be to have them among us. But there are many decent Republicans, and there have been even more (I get the point Larry makes in referring to the "current crop.") Start with the great Abraham Lincoln -- would he like Mr.Black's attitude? Would Ike have been proud of that comment? The brilliant Jacob Javits, the decent, hard-working Senator Kuchel, the true gentleman Mac Mathias, the wonderful human being Stan Tupper, the fiery Silvio Conte, the stalwart Brad Morse, the valiant Ogden Reid, the scholarly Fred Schwengel, the wise Jim Leach, the courageous Chuck Hagel (retiring), the calm courteous John Warner (retiring), the brave Mark Hatfield, the outspoken Pete McCloskey, the principled John Anderson, the fine Governor Scranton of Pennsylvania, the principled Margaret Chase Smith of Maine, the independent Millicent Fenwick -- even the repentent Lee Atwater and John Dean and Bud Krogh -- wouldn't that make a lovely grand jury to pass judgment on Mr. Black. By the way, where is the news media on this story? And is McCain going to keep him on? I hope people know all about the Jesse Helms machine that supplies men like Black to our country. I doubt it.

I went an read the article "The evolution of John McCain" that this snippet is based on.

It would be nice to point to the actual article rather then just take one small part out of it.

Black was essentially saying that McCain's knowledge was beneficial to the campaign after Bhutto's assassination.

I don't find that offensive, its probably honest. It isn't a mater of they applauded his assassination, the opposite in fact. Its a matter of McCain seems to understand the issue of national security better.
