Most economy cars are so low to the road that you have to fold down to get into them. Older people like me, have a hard time folding down to those positions, that is why I drive a S10 pickup. My legs can not fold down to get into a Cavalier. I admit my S10 only gets 25 miles per gallon, while a cavalier gets 35 miles per gallon. But it is mine and all paid for so tough it, you democrats that think no on is to have anything.
You are lucky. My F150 gets 15 mpg. And as big as it is (and as small as I am) I still sometimes rap my head on it getting in. But it's also paid for and since I am on the Dave Ramsey Plan I can't buy a new car until I have $1 million and can pay cash for it.

So what? You have no idea what the person driving that suv does with it. So you know, not everyone can just afford to go out and buy a second car to keep you happy. Some people do and thats great for them, but not everyone can. Ive explained this several times, is it that hard to figure out?
menards wrote:

<quoted text>
Actually its more like 50k miles per year, and no its usually not fully loaded. In fact, I drive my suv alone most of the time, and do most heavy towing and whatnot with my truck. Why? because I dont put a dollar value on safety. I am a good confident driver. If i get hit, I want to survive. In this town, everyone drives a truck or suv. I dont feel like going out and buying another car to save a few bucks in gas.

with snow up & over the headlights of a sable your talking 2+ feet of snow, Probably closer to three. It would take 18hr of constant 2"/hr snow to get that deep. Those "good nights" must be few and far between, considering summerville sees an average snowfall of 14" PER MONTH in the winter time.
http://www.city-data.com/city/Summerville-Pen...
I dont even live in summerville, I live further north and we get alot of lake effect snow. And in what sad world are a mercury sables headlights 3 feet off the ground? I would say theyre 1.5 if that. And then the snow drifts right over my driveway because its elevated a few feet. 6 inches of snow can make my driveway impassible if its windy enough.

Do they..

SUV's are no safer than cars. Any advantage you gain with heavy wieght/size you loose with the added rollover risk.

But simple collisions are more common than rollovers. I would rather be in my suv when im t-boned by a Civic than in my Sable or any other car. SUVs do not spontaneously roll over either. It takes driver error. If youre stupid about it, you can crash. Ive been driving them since I was 16 and ive never rolled over.

A simple collision, such at a t-bone by a honda civic can cause your SUV to fish tail and roll over... a tire blowout could cause you to loose control and roll over.

Rollovers are not just cause by "driver error"

$2 worth of salt per day- maybe. Besides, I don't use any chemicals or soil composition altering products in my yard. They are bad for the environment! That's why Purple Loosestrife is taking over in all the ditches, marshes and wetlands in many areas. Salt is used to melt the snow and ice on all the roads. The runoff creates salt water where there should be fresh water and salt loving plants such as Loosestrife invade and take over where there should be cattails and other native vegetation. This negatively affects the native birds and other wildlife that depend on the native plants for food and nesting sites.

Most accidents aren't rollovers. It's more likely you will get broad-sided or hit head on. You can keep your small car.

And? A mud puddle can cause a small car to hydroplane out of control. A deer collision in a compact can send the deer right through the windshield. What is your point?

Rollovers are caused by driver error and thats it, such as jerking the wheel upon a tire blowout. Thats how vehicles roll. Ive had more than a few tire blowouts and ive never come close to rolling over.

Dont play stupid. You know damn well an suv is much heavier than a car, therefore it is harder to hydroplane. You also know the higher up and heavier a vehicle is, the better it does in a collision, especially one with a deer. To prove this, Ive hit 5 deer in my life. A friend of mine hit one in a Ford Aspire. he was lifeflighted!

No, Just a "real" environmentalist. One with some common sense. I know that as individuals the little things we do around our own homes can make a big difference. Habitat loss and declining populations of birds and animals is the biggest environmental threat we face. If you destroyed land to build a house, mow and maintain a lawn, than you do nothing to combat the real problem- which is not air pollution. Your little car does nothing to help a Golden-winged Warbler find a place to build a nest and have babies. That's just one of the species in your area with drastic population declines. I also know that we need to drill for oil, because like it or not, we need it and it is there for us to use. And guess what- oil spills happen by natural seepage more than by us drilling.

Depends on the SUV/ car combination. Is a Jeep Wrangler an SUV? Cherokee SUV?

Some pickups may be relatively "heavy" compared to a car, but light over the rear wheels, making them easy to hydroplane and lose control.

Get with it gang.. Nothing is going to change. The democrats are not going to allow any oil drilling anywhere in the United States because it is unsightly. They are not going to change their attitude about that. So next summer gas will be $5 or more per gallon.. It is cycle that can never be reversed now. And the economy will just keep going down the tubes more and more and more. The middle east countries will soon control the world's wealth.
