Third-Graders Patted Down Over Missing $5

I hesitate to think what they might have done if $20 was missing. Perhaps a strip search?

Don't be an idiot. It isn't like they did a body cavity search. They patted them down and checked pockets and backpacks.

No wonder kids are screwed up. People like you that take exception to anything involving something that might appear to be discipline and their child and the school.

And that is what is wrong with America today. A teacher thinks that a kid stole some money. How dare they try to find the guilty party. Searching for stolen money is grounds for punching out a teacher!!!! How about whipping the butt of the little thief. Good greif what is so horrible about attempting to recover stolen money or merchandise?

"Perhaps a strip search?"

The writer may have thought he was being sarcastic, but a decade or so ago there were a number of stories about boys and girls actually being strip-searched in similar situations.

What happened here sounds like absolutely nothing. And the parents complaining about this nothing sound like the modern overindulgent "my kid is never wrong" "don't give our kids homework" kind of partents that ultimately do their kids no favors.

Can't say I'm the least bit surprised to hear such a thing coming from a Barak Obama supporter (judging by your Obama icon).

As far as whipping the culprit, or speculating about police records, maybe we should wait until it is actually determined what happened to the money. It was not found during the search.

I think the teacher was right to give a general
search for the money, it my help the child that did take it to know that takeing things that's
don't belong to them is wrong'after all the teacher is there to teach' do kill the messanger.

Who checked the teacher, substitute, student teacher and kindergarten aide?:)

I have young kids and if this happened to them I would be fine with it. If something comes up missing, see if you can find out who did it. If it was found then punish the person who did it so that the kids learn there are consequences for a person's actions. Hopefully the teacher praised the kids when the money was not found.

The thought of patting down 3rd graders makes me ill. Children that age pick their noses and smell like brussel sprouts. I would rather just reach in my wallet and replace the $5 with my own money and be done with it.

why not hire a detective who can then hire a lie detector specialist who deals in missing five dollar bills who can then suggest that an md be called in on the case to see if the children have been abused so that a psych can evaluate what can be done to save the thiefs....i can just see it now.."children, line up in the hallway. you will not be having lunch today. instead you will be taking a test....."

Instead of strip searching my students, I would have given a breif 'talk' about it is wrong to steal and then given the opportunity for the child to secretly give the money back.
I have questions though:
What was the moeny for?
Where was the money left?
Why is it assumed a student took it?
Did the teachers check the garbage (just in case it was thrown away)...?

The teachers had NO RIGHT to do this search on the students. When a teacher receives money, he/she needs to put in a safe place. A lesson could have been taught to the students and a lesson learned by the teachers. Instead, things were handeled badly.

Shame on the teachers!

Im sure you have a history aswell. I am sure that when a dollar bill turned up missing during your Kinder class they could have simply patted you down just to find it.

Shame on the teachers!
Shame on the parents for not getting involved with their own children and allowing the government to babysit their brats and then bitch about it later. If my kid would have taken that money I would have made her apologize to the teacher, the class and especially the person it belonged to. No wonder we have the dumbest kids in the world and not to mention spoiled to the core. I could only imagine your kids. I am sure you will respond with "I don't have kids" or "My kids are straight "A" students" and blah! blah! blah!

No, I actually agree with you. I agree so much I would buy you a drink. Sad thing is, parents send their kids off to school to get lessons that the parents should be teaching. Teachers cannot even put a kid in time out any more. Parents expect teachers to do all. It is not fair for the teachers, but the teachers should not have done a search. If I found out that my child stole the money she'd be in a WORLD of trouble. Then again, I am teaching her right from wrong (I know she is not perfect, but I still teach her manners and how to make wise choices).
Some kids don't have the parents that care enough to teach their children life lessons and the teachers have to do it without much support.
