Reggae on the River

Remember simpler summers when this conversation was possible: "Are you going to Reggae this year?" "Yeah." Now it sounds something like this: "Are you going to Reggae this year?" "Um, which is the one on the river?" "They are both on the river." "Which one is the one where Sean Paul made everyone angry?" Ad nauseum until you figure out that Reggae ... Full Story

Reggae on the River is the NONPROFIT Mateel's event which funds southern humboldt community programs like the teenage theater program, the homeless meal program, and the aging projects. It uses the money to run those programs. Reggae Rising the even that land owner Tom Dimmick is developing on his property is a private event. Mr. Dimmick paid the Mateel five hundred thousand dollars to settle the attempt to take control of Reggae on the River away from the nonprofit and turn it into a for profit event for the producer and himself.
At least the Times-Standard is getting better at recognizing there is a different but they still have a long way to go and they still listen to those idiot press people pumping the Reggae Rising event way too much.

It's not reggae anymore! It's more like *c*rap, gang-bangers, meth, crack, drunk fools, fights, rip-offs, getting shot, screw that! Stay home, light some relaxing herb, and put on some classic reggae!

From everything I've heard, this should be a more family-friendly event than the larger festival in the past. And it is still great music!

You need to update yourself Baby. The REAL Reggae on the River is in the hands of the Mateel again not the old production company. KMUD is streaming it live and it is awesome. Wish I were there.

Reggae on the River was a gift that was squandered by the community to which it was given. Now we can watch as the last vultures circle the remains. Fun!

Even the UFO's won't fly over the Reggae Palace of Stench while it's festival week. Who would with all the meth being consumed along with fights, gang warfare, rapes, all the Oakland rip-offs and criminal activities, houses getting ripped off for pot, money, meth, heroin...........forget it from now on.

It is time to stop this madness and have Dimmick start to cut back on this insane event that has destroyed the beauty and quiet of that section of the river

This was not the Dimmick event people--it was for the Mateel, just like the old days. This was a one day roots reggae festival--lots of families and fun. Nobody ruined the river--there was no camping on site! Didn't see any meth or any of that, only nice irie vibes. It's amazing how uninformed and even hateful so many folks on here can be...

Thank you Times Standard for doing your citizens in Southern Humboldt and their nonprofit community a great duty of care by fostering the above perceptions and comments by 1. not reporting on the trial that parted these two events and sent the old production company packing tail between legs; 2. Combining your coverage on the Mateel's Reggae on the River with the Dimmick event; and 3. failing to do any type of coverage on the event or follow up.

What ever it was it isn't anymore. It is just lazy drug infested skanks crapping in the river and in general making a mess in one of the most beautiful geographical areas of the State and pretending they care about the environment. Please let it die a horrible death.

Reggae Risin is a flop, the line up is weak, the prices are to high. Every year it get worse, I would say it,s Karma. I have been going to Reggae on the River for many years, and also have worked on the same crew, year, after year.Reggae Risin pales next to Reggae on the River. And the last straw was when some idiot fierd all the crew leaders that have dedicated so much of there time, and energy to Reggae Risin, for years. Well I hope it was worth it, Karmas a B**ch. I will never go again. your greed, and lack of love has ruined it for all, its a shame. Down with Reggae Risin.

Watch out for the crazy ~20+ HIV infected men from SF and the squirt guns filled with HIV infected urine! They are coming up again and are going to do it again. Serious stuff now as there's extreme happenings. I'm not going any more.

When I drive by the reggae festival it makes me remember hearing about AIDS and smallpox as the urine soaked ground is walked on with bare feet. You people are a bunch of bums and thieves.
