Sean Hayes Just Came Out. And He's Furious You Made Him Do It

Mar 8, 2010 | Posted by: Rick in Kansas | Full story: www.queerty.com

That Sean Hayes is gay is Hollywood's worst kept secret - circa 1998, when his character Jack debuted on Will & Grace. Played with a natural flamboyance, Hayes portrayal of the serially out-of-work mooching neighbor was either an exercise in extreme method acting, or just an extension of Hayes' true self. Or somewhere in the middle. But with an upcoming Broadway turn opposite Kristin Chenoweth in Promises, Promises, he's acknowledging what nobody pretended was even something worth hiding: that he's a proud, Emmy-winning gay actor. But damn you for making him say it aloud.

I'm shocked, shocked I tell you...well, not that shocked.

What I'm finding shocking is the idea that he's only coming out now. I think it was obvious.

Eric McCormack, the straight man who played Will, has done more for gay rights than Sean has ever done. That Sean was gay was something I never doubted so thanks for doing us such a favor, Sean, by coming out.

I don't blame an actor for staying in the closet but Sean never could pass. So why did he try?

I agree. I read that he was openly gay before taking the role on Will & Grace (a show I have admittedly never seen more than 4 minutes of), and then went back in the closet. He's such a flamer who on earth did he think he was fooling besides himself ?!

Thanks for nuthin, Sean.

So tired of gay actors still in denial for their careers. Like Jody Foster needs a few million dollars more before she finally comes out?

What these closet cases don't understand is that nobody would care if they came out because everybody already knows they're gay. They are just making themselves look stupid by pretending to be straight.

I remember when W&G first came out and I remember reading that Eric McCormick was in reality straight and that Sean was gay. I never read or heard anything to the contrary. I never thought of it as one straight guy portraying a gay and a gay guy portraying a gay also. I just saw a group of actors that had me in laughing fits, all excellent in their part. Grace was an up-to-date Lucille Ball (in fact, I swore she was channeling Lucy's spirit), Karen, the pill-popping nutjob rich bitch, Will and Jack being two of the countless number of gay stereotypes, Rosario, the wise female Benson or Hazel....just the fact that this group of actors brought gays to the forefront in a non-threatening way, made people laugh, made people see how normal we are. I don't fault any of them for not getting in the front lines in the fight. They had a way of endearing themselves to a large audience and making us so much more visible, gave us something to talk about with "them" over lunch breaks. Personally, I think they accomplished quite a bit in their run on television. Had Sean been more militant, they would have run the risk of having the same outcome as Ellen did when she had her sitcom. The humor would be gone, the show would have become too preachy and would have faced cancellation. I'm glad they didn't get militant, on or off screen. I really miss the magic they gave every week.

I wouldn't watch the show because I think they portrayed gay people offensively and unrealistically. Do gay people on tv EVER meet a guy or girl and have gay sex ? Str8 people seem to meet str8 people on tv all the time, and its obvious, or the character even says, that they had str8 sex with someone.

OH ! But we mustn't "offend" the audience by portraying gay people realistically !

Gay people are cute, funny, artistic, but they NEVER have gay sex !

Every time I hear about a gay or lesbian actor who is unwilling to come out because they are afraid of what it will do to their careers, I now think of Niel Patrick Harris. His career has taken off rather nicely.

NPH as well as other gay celebrities can be quite admired and even the objects of the affections of teen girls, for example, who get quite intrigued, "OMG" and giggly over them.(Think Adam Lambert!) This is even if the conventional wisdom in the past was that they wouldn't respond to young men who weren't interested in them. Maybe it's an attraction to the unattainable!

The times they are a-changing, slowly but surely.

There are a LOT of oenly gay actors and being open about their sexuality hasn't hurt their careers. The same goes for musicians and singers.

Daniel Pintauro
Daniel Butler (Bulldog on Frasier)
David Hyde Pierce (Niles on Frasier)
Rob Halford (singer & front man for Judas Priest
Chuck Panozzo (Musician, singer & founder of STYX)
Nathan Lane
Brad Oscar
Johnny Carson
John Glover
Melissa Etheridge
Richard Chamberlain
Raymond Burr
Jack Larson
Johnny Mathis
Janis Ian
Wanda Sykes
Joan Jett
Joan Armatrading
Tracy Chapman
Me'Shell NdegeOcello
Dusty Springfield
Lesley Gore.........
The list is long........

Thanks for nothing Sean when you could have been helping.....

While I could take issue with some of the names you listed (Raymond Burr wasn't really out during his lifetime, Richard Chamberlain didn't come out until his career was almost over, and I've never heard a word about Johnny Carson being anything but straight), I understand ... and basically agree with ... your point.

Good examples you left out are Sir Ian McKellan, Elton John, Patsy Kelly (the 1930's comedian who NEVER pretended to be anything but 100% lesbian and was still making films decades later), Chad Allen, Cheyenne Jackson, Jane Lynch ... as you said, the list goes on and on.
