How is it that this is a developing story? Santana is not a world leader of importance. Must be a slow news day.

Sorry Carlos, love you but that's just ignorant.

The President can not legalize pot. Further, the Democrats are the last Party to legalize pot. Look at what Clinton did.(Google "Donna Shalala HHS Medical Marijuana).

I suspect that Obama is totally anti-legalization, more so than ANY Republican. Almost any Democrat is rabidly opposed to legalization because they view interdiction/prohibition as a means to make minority neighborhoods better. They are more likely to think that Government can solve the drug problem.

Congress passes laws... the President signs them (or not).

However! Congress can't even legalize Cannabis. Surprised?

Here's how it works. If you don't believe me, write Debbie Stabenow and ask her.

Congress passed a law making drugs of a certain FDA classification illegal. Cannabis is in a classification category that is AUTOMATICALLY illegal.

There is no law stating that Cannabis (or Marajuana if you want that racially loaded word) is illegal.

It is the FDA that, due to really bad science, put cannabis in that classification.

The ONLY way it can be legal is if a President appoints an FDA chief that will return a sensible verdict.

See now, Congress doesn't have to take the heat on this... "Our hands are tied!" YET they and the President appoint and approve the FDA chief.

See how that works? Again, write your Democratic Party elected official and ask them yourself. Tell them what YOU want, while your're at it.

I'm a Democrat but on this issue, THEY, not the Republicans are the problem. The current system does nothing but give criminals Billions of dollars in untaxed income. The Democrats can't get their heads out of the save-the-ghetto-bleeding-heart mode, long enough to see that the massive profits are what is ruining our cities, not the actual effects of drugs.

Make the criminals get a real job... write your reps. Make them stop using the FDA classification as their excuse. Force the issue. Write!

I neither use, like, or recommend the use of cannabis (except for certain health reasons), but certainly would not put you in jail if you grow or use it.

You may be right about not legalizing it, but they can decimalize it. Then the money currently spent on enforcement can be used for better things.

The legalization of pot is long overdue. Alcohol and prescription drugs such as Vicodin, Oxycotin, etc are far worse. No stoned person has ever killed someone in a car accident. The only thing they may have hurt is a bag of donuts they eat when they get the munchies.
The government could get us out of the recession by taxing the crap out of marijuana. We could get the prison and local overcrowding of our jail system under control by letting non violent marijuana prisoners out and keeping the violent prisoners locked up.
To get past the political hang-up our representatives have on taking a stand for legalization let Congress draft a bill and let the majority of ciizens in this country take all the blame by voting in legislation to legalize marijuana.
Whenever a vote is taken to legalize marijuana for medical purposes it passes. Our government needs to listen to its people.

I thought this was a pretty interesting article from Time. In it they suggest that CA alone could receive nearly 1.4 billion dollars in revenue by taxing it alone. Imagine what kind of revenue that could produce for an entire country, not to mention the billions saved by not having to deal with the entire legal process.

Instead of a tea party at the fish ladder, how about a pot party? If we get hundreds of people they can't arrest us all.
