Another failed attempt at trying to depict my favorite singer's life. First, Marc Anthony might be a good singer, but he is NO Hector LaVoe. And Jennifer Lopez should do her research better because the movie is way off from the real story. Oh and one more thing, this movie does Marc Anthony no service; it's just another way for Jennifer Lopez to get more overrated publicity for herself in trying to hone in on Puchi's life. What more does she want? Using another man for her petty whims is totally evil! In reality, Hector LaVoe was always trying to escape from his wife; she didn't follow him around as the movie suggests. Instead of naming the film 'El Cantante", the title should be "Puchi: Victima de Hector LaVoe, and THAT is not right, defaming the name of the greatest salsa singer of all time, my idol, and salsa's martyr, HECTOR LAVOE, QUE EN PAZ DESCANSES, BRO!

I obviously haven't seen the film but based on the trailer, it's exactly what I expected. JLO trying in all desperation to be taken seroiusly as as actress. This feat has elluded her thus far and with good reason for she is just nothing more than a personality . she should just be grateful for all her wealth and enjoy herself
And most disturbing is lopez taking puchi a prson who was most cruel to hector and making her the story teller of his life of course leaving out all her many shortcoming. shame on you you should be ashamed of your self. and then stringing poor marc anthony along. if he's smart and just clear far away from any other projects with his wife and continue acting in his work , unllike jlo he is an actora nd a pretty good one.

The movie El Cantante seems like it's a great movie. Marc Anthony looks and imitates the legendary Hector Lavoe really well as in acting, gestures, style, etc. Jennifer Lopez did a stunning performance as well in this film. I think comparing it to the other film done about Hector Lavoe, El Cantante tops it. Jennifer Lopez not only demonstrated her growth as a actress and performer but as a producer in this movie aswell! OH and to those who criticized J.LO above need a reality check, Jennifer doesn't need any overrated publicity because she is already recognized in the media by her talent, so if ya'll don't know what your talking about don't say nothing at all. They portrayed Hector Lavoe's life very accurate and in the movie Puchi isn't presented as a victim they show her distinct personality so take another look at the film and then say something because obvoiusly you (70sman4life & justice2000) think you know it all about Hector & Puchi's life and you don't know what you're talking about. And about acting I guess you don't know shit either. I definately agree with tymmid's comment. Congrats to Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony for representin Puerto Rico, Puerto RIcan culture and music, Hector Lavoe, and of course New York. Thanks and good luck!

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony did an outstanding performance in this film. If you think you can do a better job I'd like to see you try and make a production to top this one, don't play yourself fool.

For your info J.LO is the highest paid latina actress in the world so I wouldn't say she isn't a good actress. She is a very talented performer and that's what got her at the prestigious level she stands in today. Who are you next to her?????????? Nobody! So if you don't know what you're talking about stop talking shit.

Stuntin Rican, and what makes YOU think you know it all? By the way, how old are you? You're talking to a guy (as well as justice 2000), people who are probably older than you and have grown up watching Hector, own his LPs with Willie Colon on vinyl, and have watched him on TV and news about him throughout our lives. You are probably one of those that thinks Daddy Yankee invented salsa LOL! If YOU know the facts, then speak. To me, you're just a newcomer and someone very misinformed. Don't let your wild fanaticism of jennifer Lopez ruin your head! Reality is...Marc Anthony ain't got it and Jennifer Lopez is too busy promoting her pussy trying to make more money that she should be happy she has enough of and stop using Marc Anthony as a money-making toll. Bottom line, she made the movie focus on her, not on the real deal (LaVoe). The other movie coming out The Singer with raul carbonell Jr. is much better...check out the full preview on youtube. Carbonell really gives Hector his rightful place, as the true Cantante. Hector is probably turning in his humble grave waiting for the moment to wring Marc Anthony's neck for being such a dumbass! And if you ask me, I am damn sure I would do a better job portraying Hector cuz everybody that knows me in my hometown of Yonkers and The Bronx (where I was born) tell me I look like Hector LaVoe! Hey, I even sing like him, play maracas, can do the gestures, drink, smoke, dress like him even use drugs like he did!! Dig that bro!

I know a lot of gorgeous blonde chicks that have a better looking rear end than JLowlife! I will admit Lopez has a nice figure, but you know, the only woman that ever had a gorgeous ass was Iris Chacon, and she still has it she makes JLo look like El periodico De Ayer! Para que sufras!!

oK, HERE WE GO AGAIN ... MY YOUNG MAN OF THE 70'S OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO BE ... YOU DON'T NEED TO INSULT JLO AS AN ENVIOUS WOMAN, OK? A REAL MAN WOULDN'T DO THAT ... THAT IS NOT CORRECT. SHE IS NOT USING ANYBODY. IN FACT, THE PARTNERS SHE HAS BEEN WITH BECAME REEALLY FAMOUS AFTER THEY WERE WITH HER. NOW, MAYBE IT'S TRUE THE STORY WAS CHANGED BUT IT'S NOT BECAUSE JLO IS EVIL, MY YOUNG MAN, IT IS BECAUSE THE TEAM IN CHARGE OF THE MARKETING AND PRODUCTION WANT TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF HER POPULARITY TO SHOW MORE OF HER PRESENCE IN THE FILM, BECAUSE WANTED OR NOT MAN OF THE 70'S OR WHATEVER, MOST PEOPLE LIKE TO SEE JLO'S FACE IN THE BIG SCREEN ... THAT IS CALLED MARKETING YOU KNOW AND THEY DO THAT WITH MOST FILMS THAT ARE REAL LIFE BASED ... IT CAN NEVER BE LITERALLY TRUTH, SORRY.

You know, you're right, man, but I still think it does no good to the moemory of the late great Hector LaVoe. It's El cantante, a movie about the man and his music. You can market the movie any way you want, and people will go watch it,why? Because it's about the man considered to be "salsa's first martyr". I bet you without JLo's presence, this movie would still be a major hit! With or without her, a LaVoe movie will always sell, just like his many concerts and mightclubs presentations did back in the good old 1970s! Vaya!

I have probably not been around as long as you, but I know that Hector Lavoe was the absolute greatest salsa singer that ever lived. I just wanted to mention that I viewed the trailer briefly and was disappointed to see that Marc Anthony made no attempts at imitating Hector's unique, but awesome voice. Domingo Quinones, in Quien Mato Hector Lavoe did a much, much better job (in vocals).
I believe that it was also a bad move on Marc Anthony's part.

HAHA YOU GUYS ARE A JOKE (THE HATERS)
PUCHI, THE WIFE OF HECTOR LAVOE CONTACTED JENNIFER LOPEZ AND HER PRODUCTION COMPANY YEARS AGO, ASKING IF JENNIFER LOPEZ WOULD LIKE TO PLAY HER IN HER OWN BIOPIC, BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT JENNIFER DID A GREAT JOB IN SELENA'S BIOPIC.

SO THIS WAS ALL SET-UP WAY BEFORE MARC AND JENNIFER WERE A COUPLE.

GIVE THE MOVIE A CHANGE, IT"S NOT FOR NOTHING THAT THERE'S A LOT OF BUZZ FOR THE OSCAR's AND GLOBES FOR 2007. AND IT DIDN'T PREMIERE FOR NOTHING AT THE TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, AND AFTER THE FESTIVAL THIS MOVIE WAS SOLD FOR THE HIGHEST RATE/BID FOR NEARLY 6 MILLION US DOLLAR

NEWS FLASH EVERYONE!! Puchi knocked Hector off the 9th floor of the hotel in Puerto Rico. No suicide attempt, and yeah, Hector might have been depressed and all stoned but he would never have jumped by his own will.(Just pay attention to the E! True Hollywood Story about Hector LaVoe and read between the lines in the segment that talks about his plunge...) Hey, I wouldn't blame him for jumping with a trashy wife like the one he had. But isn't it a mere coincidence that the same way Hector fell was the way Puchi killed herself!? She committed suicide by jumping out of her apartment in The Bronx! Put two plus two and what do you get? She was a real sick woman with a lot of problems she made for herself. LaVoe was a victim of Puchi's abuse, not to mention other culprits like Ralph Mercado, Johnny Pacheco, hey even his compadre Willie Colon was to blame. The reason I don't like the JLo flick is because it does no justice to the man LaVoe and his music. Rather, it glorifies Puchi, making her the storyteller for one and making herself the hero that made Hector a star. He made himself a star and also thanks to Pacheco and Willie. I strongly suggest watching the Raul Carbonell movie about LaVoe because that movie really serves justice to the story of my idol, the late great Hector LaVoe. As I have mentioned before, the money is not the issue. Any LaVoe movie made by any producer will sell...BOTTOM LINE! Jennifer Lopez is not God; she is just another ordinary woman who happened to make it big thanks to her talent. There is nothing outstanding about her because there are so many women out there doing the same thing JLo is doing. If you wanna talk about rear ends, there are tons of women with better looking rear ends, if that's in question. She might be rich, but there are tons of other famous women that are rich! Singing and dancing, come on!! Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera do it HAHA!(let's not even get into the race thing cuz it's irrelevant). Well, enough said, let's just watch the darn movie and be the judges of it later! See ya! LONG LIVE THE 70s!!!!!

OOps, my bad... I have been around longer than you. The way you make yourself sound, I thought you were in your 40's or 50's, maybe even 60's.

Please stop being so negative. It doesn't matter whether the movie glorifies Puchi or not. The important thing is that Hector Lavoe's life story and talent will be introduced to many who have not heard of him (caucasians, asians, african americans, etc.) His legacy will always live on and those who truly love and admire him would not spend so much energy badmouthing someone Lavoe must have loved if he chose to stay with her.

I understand your anger (to some extent), but instead of wasting your energy in a negative way, you, everyone, should write about how Hector touched our lives with his beautiful lyrics.
Hector Lavoe was the greatest and still is.

No, on the contrary, you are right, man! I would like to send a shout-out to all of you on this forum on El Cantante. Peace and love to all of ya! If I sounded negative, I am a die-hard LaVoe man, please excuse me. It hits home sometimes when I think of Hector not only for his music but because my father looks so much like Hector, and all my friends and fellow Puerto ricans tell me I also look a lot like him, and it makes me sad when I see old videos of Lavoe. It's like watching my father performing what he knows best, CANTAR. Last Saturday, i got together with a few of my buddies, bought a few bottles of Bacardi, and we were spinning my Willie and Hector albums as well as the old salsa from the great 70's and it made me very nostalgic. That man has really touched my life, and I want to see his glory justified. So y'all excuse me, Germanimania, NYRicanAZ and all of you fellows. My most sincere apology to all.

Thanks for taking my constructive criticism and apologizing to us "fellows", however, I'm not a male, I'm a female. My "fantasy love affair" with Hector Lavoe started when I was a little girl in the 70s. I lived in a predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhood in Brooklyn and I remember hearing the Lavoe tunes blasting from everyone's apartment including ours.

Lavoe was and still is one of a kind. There are many talented singers out there now, but not like Lavoe. His songs always told a story, he wasn't full of himself (he knew he was "the man", but he always gave credit to other great salsa singers), he never made excuses for his shortcomings (drug problem), he improvised effortlessly (which is something that's not easy to do), and he always paid homage to our beautiful Isla.

When I listen to his music it fills me up with pride and joy but it also saddens me. It saddens me because deep down inside he wasn't very happy (even though he had all the fame and money that anyone can ever dream of). The music industry exploited him and then turned their backs on him when he was down and out. I know it's the nature of the business, but it still shouldn't have happened.

Lavoe is at a better place now and still entertaining those around him with his great songs and funny but strange antics. May his songs and unique talent and voice live forever.
