RLS was my maternal great grandfather's cousin.
I have a copy of the family tree branching from him through to myself and also have some of his silver spoons which were passed down through the family.

RLS was the child of the brother of Robert Stevenson who is the father of Samuel Stevenson who is the father of Annie Lindsay Stevenson who is my maternal grandmother. I'm just trying to find the brother's name / RSL's father's name to trace the connection.

I've just found some good information about RLS on Wikipedia - but it doesn't mention the brother I'd hoped to confirm... Hmmm.

My grandmother Dorothy told me several years before her death Robert Lewis Stevenson was my great or great great uncle. Recently I've started researching ties to the Parker name, any info on this?

I am new to genealogy. Years ago my father told me that Robert Louis Stevenson was one of our ancestors. My great grandmother, Mary Abigail Harris (born 5/14/1842 in NY) and Benjamin V. Stevenson (born 11/19/1841 in NY) were married on 7/3/1863 in Brooklyn, NY. I know Benjamin's mother's first name was Catherine (born 1816 in Maryland). Do these names relate to anyone else's tree? Thank you.

Hi not entirely how accurate this is and there are a few gaps but may be of some help.

As far as I am aware RLS' tree goes back to a James Stevenson who had a son in 1675 called Robert Stevenson. Robert Stevenson had 10 children two of which were Hugh (b. 1749 d. 1774) and Alan Stevenson (b. June 1752 d.1774). Alan Stvenson married Jane Lillie and gave birth to Robert Stevenson (b.1772 d. 1850). Alan died and Jane Lillie remarried Thomas Smith. Robert married his step sister Jean Smith in 1799. Robert and Jean had Four children, David Stevenson (b. 1815 d. 1886), Alan Stevenson (b. 1807 d. 1865), Thomas Stevenson (b. 1818 d. 1887) and Jane Stevenson. Jane Stevenson married Adam Warden and had Jane Elderton Warden, Jessie, Warden, Robert Warden, Mary Warden and Thomas Warden. David Stevenson had sons Charles Alexander Stevenson (1855-1950) and David Alan Stvenson (1854-1938) not sure about daughters. Thomas Stevenson married Margret Isabella Balfour and had Robert Louis Stevenson.

Robert Louis Stevenson's great great grandfather was David Lillie, Deacon of the Wrights Glasgow ( born early 18th century). He had two daughters, Jean and Davida. Jean married Alan Stevenson a West India merchant and they had a son Robert who was the lighthouse engineer who died on 12/01 1850. His son Robert was the father of RLS.
Davida Lillie is a grandparent of mine ( too many greats to mention )and as I said when I wrote earlier I have a copy of the family tree and spoons given to my great grandmother by her cousin, Robert Louis Stevenson.

Robert Louis Stevenson was the 1st cousin of my great grandmother Adelaide Mary Stevenson who married William Gray in Wellington, NZ in 1881.

I'm also in NZ and a keen family historian. If you'd like to share info please contact me at:

I have been very interested in RLS since I was young and was told that he was an ancestor of mine. I am kind of new to genealogy and have been struggling to find the connection, which is my grandfather. His name was Roger Stevenson Covert, and had told me that the Stevenson name had been passed on through his lineage as a middle name, which I have been given.

My grandfather was raised in Saratoga, NY if that provides any leads. Any help I could get would mean a lot to me, much of my artwork is inspired by the connection I have with my grandfather and RLS. My email is Boom.Duckman@gmail.com or you could respond on here.

Thank you in advance for any help, I would also graciously offer a fine handmade book (by my hands) to anyone that can give me some information.

Robert Louis Stevenson was a first cousin of my great grandmother Euphemia Thorburn (maiden name Milne), daughter of John Milne and Elizabeth Law. John Milne was of Milne & Sons, Edinburgh, Gas engineers who worked with Thomas Stevenson(Vanessalighthouses), RLS's father.

Hello Anon in Chester!

I am a g-g-g-g granddaughter of Dr William Warden, surgeon of the Northumberland 1777-1849 grand uncle to Adam Warden who married Jean Stevenson. I have just met with a descendant of Adam and Jean here in Toronto, I guess she and I would be about sixth cousins. We discussed Dr Warden's book Letters from St Helena, but were also wanting to confirm the marriage of Adam and Jean or Jane. Are you in Chester, England. I think we might more info to trade on family history!

I to have also been told I am a descendent of RLS. My maternal grandfather is a Robert Henry Stevenson (1934) and his father (my maternal great-grandfather) was also a Robert Joseph (not 100% sure about middle name) Stevenson (1912). My g-g grandfather was a Robert Thomas Stevenson (1885). We are then not sure whether my g-g-g grandfather was born in Australia or migrated to Australia but he was also a Robert Stevenson. If anyone has any information, or has found these names on their trees could the please get in contact jessica-nettleton@hotmail.com
Kind regards

When I was a kid my grandmother had a copy of an article from our local paper saying that "Robert Louis Stevenson is attending Rutgers" What I remember from the article it stated that the article was talking about my grandmother's brother (who was also named Robert Louis Stevenson) was a 7th cousin from the famous author.
