At the end of the Golden Globe Awards last week, host Ricky Gervais thanked various people for helping complete the program successfully, and he then concluded by thanking God for "making me an atheist." "I would draw attention to Gervais’ phrase that there is no scientific evidence for the existence of God. I concede his point that science, as some people understand it, does not, indeed cannot, provide complete evidence for God."

Why would God hide from scientific discovery, if it existed?

I do not see his comment, "...thank god I'm an atheist..." as divisive at all.

I see it more of a double-entendre, or a statement of irony.

If the theists are right? Then they believe their god made people as they are--including Gervais, complete with his atheism intact. Bad for theists... good for atheism.

If the theists are wrong? Gervais' comment is merely an amusing joke. Again? Bad for theists, good for atheism.

Either way? It's a win-win comment, the way I see it.
