Yes Office Politics goes on in Canada North America Too

david and irving would like to draw your attention to the recent
commotion at community radio station ckln

amongst many others, long time friend and avid supporter of our
underground music scene denise benson was unceremoniously fired by
interim management

denise has been a pillar of enthusiasm and support in our community for
over two decades and her radio program ‘mental chatter’ on ckln is the
cutting edge of smart music and what we fully consider essential and
vitally culturally significant

we also have a long and endearing relationship with denise - it was
denise who recognized us right from the very start - her praise of
promise events and listings in her eye magazine ‘db’s best bests’ column
helped give us much confidence to continue, grow and thrive and we see
her as a mentor and inspiration of all that’s good

the loss of denise at ckln is something with which we take personal
offense and we encourage you to be pissed off too

included below is a recent email from denise - take the time to take it
all in, understand the issue from as many perspectives as possible, and
join us in action by emailing the radio station and crtc (links provided

Below you'll find info I shared on Facebook this past Monday after
learning I had been dismissed as a volunteer programmer from CKLN after
21 years of hosting my show, MENTAL CHATTER. There is a lot of info here
so digest as you're able. If you're on Facebook, I suggest checking the
notes posted there as there are also responses from more than 70
concerned people and it's a great way to keep connected and updated.
I'll be adding more info on Sunday. Those can be found at:

- There is also a brief, but very clear and helpful news article that
ran on Exclaim.ca this past Tuesday. You can find this here:

- I will also be updating my own sadly-out-of-date at the moment website
denisebenson.com very shortly with all of this info and updates for the
many people who are not on Facebook. I've prioritized getting word out
on FB for the moment simply because word can spread extra quickly and
because people can make comments and be in contact with me and each

This isn't just about any one of us who've been dismissed; it's about
the systematic dismantling of an entire community radio station that
hundreds of thousands of listeners, artists, activists and others have
held so dear for 25 years. Here's that (lengthy) info....

hello friends,

Many of you are longtime listeners and supporters of my Mental Chatter
radio program, which has been heard on CKLN 88.1FM since 1987. I've been
a volunteer at the station for the past 21 years, and also worked on the
management team, first as Development Director (fundraising) and then as
Program and Music Director for a number of years in the early '90s.

In short, I know CKLN's principles, policies and stated mandate
intimately, as I am among the hundreds of people who worked to develop
CKLN into the socially, culturally, and artistically progressive and
adventurous radio station it once was.

This past weekend, while I was on vacation, I received a one sentence
dismissal 'letter' via email from Interim Station Manager (I'll return
to the 'interim' part) Mike Phillips. It reads:

Aug 15, 2008

Denise Benson

Please be advised that your volunteer services at CKLN Radio Inc are no
longer required effective immediately.

Mike Phillips.

Yes, that's the extent of it. No cause, no reason, no notice, absolutely
no respect. This is the exact same dismissal 'letter' sent now to more
than 25 volunteers at CKLN over the past few months. Some of these now
dismissed programmers include:

- Verlia Stephens, Limin' With Verlia
- Chloe Onari, Dat Dere
- David Barnard, Lowdown to Uptown
- Ron Nelson and Lisa Skeete, Reggaemania
- Claudia McKoy, Upsurgence
- Audrey Redman, Honour the Earth
- the entire Friday Word of Mouth news crew
- the entire Radio Cliteracy crew
- Nik Red and DJ San Fran, both of Aftrotransit (at the same time as me)
- DJs Dialect and Vision, Bruckbeat Radio (at the same time as me)
- Kristin Schwartz, CKLN's longtime News Director
- and many more....

Those of you who have been listening to CKLN over the past six months in
particular may have noticed that the radio station not only often sounds
terrible technically (Mike Phillips, the Interim Station Manager also
happens to be CKLN's technical Engineer), it has been heavily gutted,
both in terms of progressive content and with this firing of many

I don't know exactly how to explain the situation. It would be more
clear if I could say 'They're gutting the station to put in more
commercially viable programming'(which many people have been
speculating may be the case) or if I could, with certainty, say 'They're
firing us in order to create lots of room to put in Ryerson student
programming'(which may also be the case,, effectively pitting Ryerson
students against community members at a campus-community radio station
funded by both).

What is 100% clear is that Interim Station Manager Mike Phillips and
Interim Program Director Tony Barnes (both appointed by a Board of
Directors on which they now sit and have sat on in the past) have
specifically targeted and fired volunteer programmers who have spoken
out about their being hired (with no hiring process) in the first place
and / or the detrimental decisions they have made and are making.

If you would like to file complaints directly to the CRTC (the national
governing body for radio and television broadcasters), information on
how to do so can be found here:

I'll add further notes and information as I'm able. For now, thank-you
to the dozens of people who've already sent emails and wall posts and
words of encouragement. Keep in touch. xoxo
