It's wonderful that our city was chosen by Gervais for his Hollywood movie. I felt so insulted when an out of towner made this comment...."Why is he filming in Lowell, what was he thinking?" I just looked at him and said , "Why not Lowell?" He didn't answer me and I could have cared less!! But, I would have proudly said, "Because Lowell was polite, accomodating, pleaant and the city surroundings look great on film.....more than enough reasons for any film crew to want to come back!

There it is. I was wondering when the Lowell bashing would show up.

Not everyone in Lowell is shooting up the place in Lowell sir or madame. Some of us have the common decency to use a molotov cocktail.

The reason Lowell gets a bad rap is that outsiders don't know about the good parts of Lowell. For example, we all know the difference between Roxbury and Faneuil Hall. But most non-Lowellians don't know the difference between Downtown Lowell and the Lower Highlands.

And don't forget the tax breaks, the likes of which you'll never see. I don't go to Lowell very often anymore but I used to live there. I think the movie production is an unreasonable burden on the people of Lowell and especially the business owners anywhere the film crew happens to be working.

The lower highlands are on the rougher side, downtown's quieter for the most part. I've lived in both areas.

My point is that people should want to visit Downtown Lowell a la Faneuil Hall. But they may perceive Lowell as Roxbury. I don't mean to slight the Lower Highlands. I've lived there and hope things can turn around.

Why? Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market are destinations. You can go there any weekend and have a great time. Lowell offers nothing. The there's the FREE summer concerts, last year the line-up was
June 16 - Frankie Valli
June 23 - Johnny Rivers
July 14 - The Grassroots featuring Rob Grill and The Beaver Brown Band
July 28 - The 70s Soul Explosion with The Stylistics, The Chi-Lites, & Harold Melvin's Blue Notes
August 11 - The Beach Boys

Lowell does offer the NOT FOR FREE Lowell Summer Music Series. This year I actually have heard of a few people on the event list.

Then there's the food. At Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market Place there are lot's of places to get some great food. I've been to the Lowell Folk Festival 3 times and couldn't find anything fit to eat. The last time I bought food there it was 4 overpriced and overcooked burgers that ended up in the trash. I haven't been in the past couple of years because the quality of the food and the performers was worsening.

Not everything is free. Someone is paying for them to perform there. Obviously Boston has more resources than Lowell. You must have been really hungry to buy 4 hamburgers. The folk festival is mainly about ethnic food. You can have a great time in Lowell on any given weekend. But if you don't like Lowell don't hate, just ignore us.

I really wasn't that hunger, there were 4 of us. No one could eat the crap. I don't hate Lowell, and while Boston may have more resources you must pay for the concerts in Lowell. The part that gets me is that you have to listen to 20 or 30 minutes of commercials before each show so the 'sponsers' can be acknowledged. I stopped going a couple of years ago. The folk festival was getting worse each year too. Stopped going to that as well.

I'm always happy but I do question some things. As far as you not bumping into me at the events in Lowell you have nothing to worry about. Even though it's just a short distance from Tyngsboro there is little there that would get me to pay for the gas to go there.

If you think I'm always bitching and whinning please explain exactly what it is you're doing in your post. Looks like bitching and whinning to me. Skip over my posts if they ruin your day, see how helpful I am, most people could figure that out for themselves.
