This is one of the most insightful and honest reviews that i have ever read.
As a composer who attended the concert -- and perhaps a rare audience- member who went especially to hear "Atmospheres," I was very disappointed that Ligeti's work was not given a chance to 'breathe' after its performance. Although the joining of the two pieces DID work artistically on some level, I do not believe it to be within the artistic province of Maestro Jurowski to link these works. Perhaps he was nervous at the reception of this historically abstract masterpiece. If he is that spineless, he shouldn't have programmed the work in the first place. All said, it was quite an ambitious program, and a very challenging and rewarding night of music-making thanks to this wonderful orchestra and excellent programming. There should be more programs such as this one.
