Ticket to heaven

You don't have look any farther than the 'tour dates' section of Randy Travis' Web site to understand just how fascinating his life and career have been to date -- the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter lists his upcoming shows as either 'inspirational' or 'country.' Travis struggled with substance abuse as a teenager; wedged himself into the country mainstream at a time when honky-tonk, his preferred style, was out of favor; then mostly abandoned country for the much less visible world of gospel music. Most Nashville types cling to success with an iron grip; Travis seems content to let go and leave his fate to a higher power. Read more

I think this author has it twisted. Randy didn't abandon county music. Country radio abandoned Randy, for the more pop sounding oriented artists that continue to be the choice of radio pd's and mds 10 yrs later.

I recall calling my local country station requesting a Randy song (right after his "Full Circle Album was released). The DJ told me that "Randy was on his way out".

At the time he was still the hottest concert draw and still making hit songs when radio decided he was no longer the key artist to their future success. They opted for more pop oriented artists who could compete with the pop music stations in the area. Thus Randy became expendable to them.

So please do not say he abondoned his country roots. If you listen to a single one of his gospel albums they are steeped in his traditional country sound and prodcution.
