Rajesh Khanna was titled the superstar in the 1970s when the word reflected something special amidst a sea of 'stars'. Today every tom, dick and Harry is a superstar and the word 'star' has fallen out of use. Rajesh Khanna is in today's terms a super-megastar, who is still mobbed by frenzied crowds of fans in his old age and after years of staying out of the limelight. His popularity and fan following today has hardly diminished, so his hits and flops hardly matter. Rajesh Khanna is right, his fans will always remain his and his alone.
Long live Rajesh! Long Live the King! |

I think the timing of this ad was not right. They should have waited and made sure kaka looks healthier and better in front of the camera. This ad is more like showing the world that this is how he looks very weak and ailing. Not a good timing.... . |

Super Megastar sounds like a desperate terminology.

I donot agree with you. When the term super itself lost its dignity due to tagging with sub-standard and undeserved fellows; something more powerful word should be tagged with Kakaji. I support Amrit. |

I fully agree with the facts of Amritji that when every tom dick and harry who continuously gives only flop film and still be called a super star. Then certain rajesh khanna is not a super star. He is definitely a super mega star. In fact I have coined a new LARGER term for kakaji. EVERLASTING AND EVERGREEN SUPER DUPER SUPREME MEGA STAR OF ALL GENERATIONS.

Rajesh khanna decided to join politics in early nineties and was elected Member of Parliament for a 5 year term from 1991 through to 1996 representing New Delhi as his constituency. He also starred in 3 movies during this period. He does continue to appear on the tinsel screen as the central character in few films post 1998.Rajesh played the main lead in two serials 'Ittefaque' and 'Apne Paraye' on television during 2001-02 and in Raghukul Reet Sada Chali Aayi in 2008-09.He was the winner of six Filmfare awards and was nominated for fourteen times. He holds the maximum number of BJFA awards for the best actor - four and was nominated for the same 25 times.

Rajesh khannas first movie was released in 1966- Aakhri khat and followed by raaz in 1967 then super duper hit in 1969 - Aradhana and extraordinary success continued upto 1974. He never went into oblivion from 1974 he had his share of hits, super hits and flops until 1990 and then powerful character role even in 1999- Aa ab lout chalein - Today this movies is remembered is kakas performance and not bythe performance of hero and heroine of that film. Kakaji also performed in a bengali music album in 2003 - ananda dhara bohichie - based on rabindra sangeet. He performed in this album free of cost. His last serial raghkul reet sada chalein aaye in 2008-09 it ran for almost one year. and last but not the least, the latest Havells fans ad in May, 2012. It drew the attention of young and old alike. Hence the period of journey is from 1966-2012 a long span of 45-46 years. But still the media journalists like rajdeep sardesai calls him a faded away star. Is not it a injustice to a star actor like kakaji who are born once in a life time. If rajesh khanna is a faded away star, then what term we should coin for Abhishek bachchan who has not given a single hit on his own prowess and power. But he is still in the lime light just because he is the son of Big B. Will ABs son survive for 45 years.

When Michael Jackson performed live in Mumbai way back in 1997,Shobha De,then had mentioned in her newspaper column in Times Of India that she has not witnessed such a craze for any Indian filmstar other than Rajesh Khanna. If Rajesh Khanna was as popular as Michael Jackson at the peak of his career how huge his superstardom must have been.
Shobha De was an eye witness to the craze and mass adulation generated by Khanna as she was the editor of Stardust when Rajesh Khanna's photo appeared in the first issue of Stardust in October 1971.She referred to Rajesh Khanna as a phenomenon rather than just a superstar. Superstar, phenomenon, national craze,hearthrob,hardil-e-aziz, consumer's dream were the the terms used then for Rajesh Khanna. |

Also,Shobha De in one of her earlier columns in 1994 described Rajesh Khanna as the true superstar. She compared Rajesh Khanna's popularity at it's peak to international celebrities like Elvis Presely,The Beatles,Michael Jackson and Madonna. She further emphasised that the entire nation seemed to be under his spell at that point of time.Millions of women swooned over him and his superstardom was exclusive as long as it lasted.According to her Rajesh Khanna lost his superstardom and all his female fans after his marriage to Dimple Kapadia.

Sarkar you are absolutely correct, but Kaka's craze did not fizzle out in a few years as commonly believed. In 2000, 2006 and 2008 he visited Chandigarh, Nainital and Amritsar. In all three cases he was mobbed by a frantic crowd desperate to see a glimpse of him. That is why he is still today a Super-Megastar.

Thats the 1st ive heard his a super"mega" star? . |

Judged: 1 The only "Megastar" ive read is in the below cut/paste: Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and superstar Aamir Khan are among the contenders for the title of India's Prime Icon. BIG CBS PRIME has pitted them as contenders among other known names from various fields for its upcoming show India's Prime Icon, said a statement from the channel. Other contenders for the title on the show, expected to start in the third week of June, include Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, A.R. Rahman, Leander Paes, Rahul Gandhi, Kishor Biyani, Adi Godrej, Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid. http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/amitabh-ba... . |

During the period of 1970-75, most of the children born in India were given the name - Rajesh, a single name or as a prefix or as a suffix. The name of rajesh followed in any way. The phenomenal craze went to such a height that even the surname i.e. rajesh khanna was added along with the original surname of the children born. This is way he is called a national craze.

Not international craze? . |

Mumbai, India |
The Beatle mania also lasted for four years untill their split in 1968,yet they have had fans of their music till date. Similarly Rajesh Khanna old movies are remembered, watched and songs hummed after more than four decades, especially amongst so many NRI's I personally know. |

Rajesh Khanna arrived at a time when satellite channels were not existing. There is no video recording of his superstardom at it's peak, except for the Bombay Superstar documentary available on youtube. However,Rajesh Khanna's superstardom did manage to create a curiosity in the international media to have a documentary made on him, especially when hindi films was completely unknown to them. |

I agree that a lot of parents named their sons as Rajesh (I did too) but no, not an International craze. |
|
Varanasi, India |
In spite of non availability of International Platform BBC made a documentary only on Kakaji; not on his other seniors/contemporaries; which itself shows his International Craze (without self promotion stratagey via IIFA and other bodies). |

Here the term under discussion is Super Mega Star; if media is using Mega Star for AB, then it is perfectly alright to use SUPER MEGA STAR FOR RAJESH KHANNA.
