Not sure how this is really news. In all the years of his "bisexuality" I never saw him linked romantically with ANYONE.

I used to live in ATL and so I knew many guys who'd been with him, but no women. Not one.

I think everyone realized he was gay before he could admit it to himself. I'm glad he finally came to terms with who he is.

audra is right. sometimes we live in denial for a while. but in this case maybe he just wanted a singing career, because with a few exceptions when you come out in the entertainment industry your career is over. exception is ellen and maybe elton john. who else still thrives after being out?

One of the worse kept "secrets" in the music biz. I'm about a suprised as I was when George Michael was caught with his pants down in public.

I don't think anyone ever really thought Little Richard, Liberace, Boy George or Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys, the 4th biggest selling dance act after Donna Summer, Madonna and Janet Jackson) were straight. Most acts have a natural lifespan. Who's to say whether R.E.M. would have done any better or worse than acts such as Erasure or the Cure which have uncloseted lead singers.

Then again, playing coy hasn't affected Morrissey's (the Smiths) career any.

True. Gay or straight, if your music is good, you will be successful. If it is not, then you fade away and end up on bad reality shows.

I remember in the 80's when all the "cool guys" listened to Depeche Mode, even though they were associated with being gay, at least where I grew up. But since everyone liked their music, it didn't matter.

But in the end, there is some advantage to keeping in the closet. Look at Backstreet Boys or N'sync. They were carried to success by screaming teen girls who dreamed of marriage with the band members. Take away that little fantasy and they become less appealing to that fan base...
Kinda the same reason I think American Idol gay contestants don't discuss it outloud. Who watches and votes the most on that show? Teen girls.

Morrissey never played "coy" - anytime he was specific about who he was singing to it was always a guy. One of the 1st Smith's songs was "This Charming Man" which goes "someone so handsome... yadda yadda yadda". As for Michael Stipe he used to date this guy who worked the door of this club Einstein's I used to go to back in the mid 80's. What I'm over if a straight guy sleeps with a guy once he's labeled gay but if a gay guy sleeps with a woman, like Stipe did, he's still labeled gay.

Come to think of it that New Wave-ish 80's era of music had an abundance of gay acts. Nowhere else have I seen this repeated unfortunately.

Well, I wouldn't recommend the entire group be openly gay. But just think if one member of either Backstreet Boys or N'Sync were openly gay during their heyday. I doubt it would've lost them any teenage girl fans (since they could still fantasize about the other members) and would've brought them quite a few new ones.

Guess we'll have to wait 'til the next boy band wave to test that theory.

I think she's more famous for being a lesbian woman than a musician, even though I own two of her albums myself. So, as far as I'm conserned, it only made her career better. XD
And what about that guy who plays Dumbledore?
(Which is funny,'cuz Dumbledore is too, LOL. What a coincidence....XD)

I think you will find that Robert Smith from The Cure is straight and happily married.
