Carl still is in trouble. I'm not dismissing that and I don't think any suit should benefit him. he's got to pay for what he did.
It should benefit the public. So maybe cameras in all cars should be the outcome and a couple of suspensions.

I know Mpls cops on the Northside well enough to inform you all that these officers are less than honorable as a whole. I work in St. Paul and I've never met a nicer group of officers in my 40 years, and never had a problem with them, not ONCE. Although Mr Eller may have been wrong (What ever happened to innocent until proved guilty for all you folks claiming Eller reached beneath his old jock stap and pulled the race card out with his lawsuit?), he'll have his day in court, his choice, the system is what it is and the cops may have went too far, you can ask Rodney King about that. Fact is I just beat two Mpls Cops on a petty charge because a. They couldn't remember who was driving the squad car when they stopped me, b. They didn't recall who approached me, or even who wrote the ticket. c. They couldn't recall where they stopped me etc. etc. Yes they are inept overall. They feel above the law and aren't challenged as much as they should be. They lie more than the suspects they arrest and I can attest to that from my court case. Good luck Mr. Eller, and yes the car(s) should have been equiped with cameras AT LEAST ONE OF THEM!! Then we could lean to the "right" and start to believe our beloved police but when they even shoot there own (Officer Ngo a few years back) and try to avoid admission of guilt? Shameless, some of them are just shameless NOT ALL of them but many, too many.

Glad to hear you're active. I may actually know you, I lived in the 5th Ward for over a decade. I worked with a couple of community leaders to resolve some of the bad relations between the cops and citizens. An incredible amount lived in Maple Grove, Elk River, and Forest Lake.
Your current Chief may be from there, but how long has he been Chief? Less than two years? That culture in Mpls goes back more than two years. The previous two chiefs left under clouds of lawsuits and internal strife. Now that I mention, Dolan is currently under lawsuits from his own cops and Mpls has settled two citizen suits already though one was before Dolan took over. He's off to a great start.
Harrington grew up on the southside of Chicago and went to Dartmouth and came to St Paul in the late 70's and became a street cop. Before him, Bill Finney born and raised in St Paul was Chief for years. Up until three years ago, our crooked Sheriff even lived in the city. Our street cops representative lives in St Paul too. Where does Delmonico live? It makes a difference when they are assessing their cops.
St Paul cops handle more calls than any other city near its size. We have been under employed when it came to cops for years hence the MORE COPS project that forced the city to commit to 100 more cops in 4 years.
You're right about not hearing about Minneapolis cops when they beat the rap. Maybe because its actual news when peoples rights are viciously violated.
I am not interested in a Minneapolis vs. St. Paul argument because at the end of the day its pointless. My objection is that a lot of people from outside of Minneapolis have opinions of Minneapolis Police that are very old. More than half of the officers doing street patrol in Minneapolis have less than 7 years on the job. They are getting painted with the same brush that cops of ten and twenty years ago are painted with. Having seen the academy firsthand--since they moved it in to my neighborhood in north Minneapolis--I know that they are instilling respect and discipline into their training. I can't remember the last time into a police officer on the northside who did not address me as sir. I deliver bread to grocery stores (great job, I know..) so I work late at night and early in the morning. I get stopped more than average probably because of the hours I work, I am mixed race and I have never been treated disrespectfully by Minneapolis cops. I can't say that about some of the suburbs and St. Paul cops.

Since you asked, I made a couple of phone calls. Delomonico lives outside of Minneapolis--by three houses. The amount of money paid out in lawsuits has decreased by 70% over the last eight years.

I will not defend previous chiefs--both from outside the department. What Chief Dolan, a Minneapolis kid, is doing is cleaning up problems that his predecessors created.

As for the issue at hand, here's what's happening: Eller is filing suit in federal court on items that were thrown out in an evidentiary hearing in Hennepin court--because they aren't true. His lawyers want the potential jury in Eller's criminal case to hear the news about the (fake) claims in the federal lawsuit because he couldn't those fake claims in front of the jury in district court. Do you really think its a coincidence he filed the federal lawsuit on the same day jury selection started in his criminal trial?

Gee, based on one encounter. That's emprirical evidence. I LIVE there see cops aevery day. I have been ticketed three times in St. Paul in the last ten years in St. Paul and never once been convicted. The cops just don't show up to court. One I deserved and just went to see if I could get a deal. Two I didn't deserve. I drive a bread truck at late hours and it may look suspicious--especially if I have one with no markings--so I get stopped more than most people. I will gladly get stopped in Minneapolis. St. Paul cops are decent too..but there are some suburbs where its really scary.
