Yep must be a scam. They say its not compulsory to pay 20 pounds for the guide but then theres no option to get the test booked unless you send "Ann Powell" you confirmation job pack number after you pay....... Of course I got no response after I did the test, which in itself looked dodgy. I mean you could click on the link that opened it multiple times and do the test multiple times and just enter a different email address each time.....

I applied to Mermaidgroup and took the test. I didn't have to pay anything and didn't download the book.
If you have a valid reason for not downloading then it seems to be fine.
People are too quick to jump to a negative conclusion. Think before judging.

No you don't have to pay for the ship guide it's NOT compulsory! I didn't buy it and I'm still receiving a test in the next couple days. Even if you do buy it it does not give you any more chance of securing the job. There are no right or wrong answers. The tests are designed to identify the extent to which you are able to perceive, identify and manage emotions in yourself and others, measuring your general cognitive ability as well as determine whether you have the right characteristic traits to fit into a small community and work as part of a large team.
