Pope Benedict XVI and the atheists

There are 21 comments on the New Vision story from Sep 26, 2010, titled Pope Benedict XVI and the atheists. In it, New Vision reports that:

By Gwynne Dyer THE best defence is a good offense. A less worldly pope, making a state visit to Britain as the revelations about Catholic priests and bishops abusing the children in their care spread across Europe, might have been reduced to shame and silence.

In stead of attacking the atheists, the Pope and his pedophile priest shoule be atacking this: "I asked my grandmother who is catholic from Italy and ..has all her faculties if she knew about the Abuse in the Catholic Chuch. I was shocked by her response.... she said.."Everybody knows about that, you just don't talk about it."

Like everyone knew the priests ate meat on Fridays,
when I heard that from an ex-nun, I could not believe the Catholics who ate fish and beans on Fridays, are still Catholics. I left because the priest said I should become a protestant, he refused my daughter to make her Communion, because we didn't use the envelopes for our donations, and I was a devout Catholic.

I have found the true religion, Jehovah's witnesses; and I am proud to imitate Jesus Christ, we do not worship Jesus, or his earthly mother, we worship the true God of the Bible, Jehovah God. Psalm 83:18

Right. So one priest says something you don't like and you leave the church. Sounds like you were looking for an excuse to do what you want. Okay, so this priest got out of line. Who said priests were (are) perfect? The child abuse thing makes everybody sick, but that does not mean all priests are pederasts, any more than it makes them al saints. Gimme a break. BTW, as a former catholic, do you think you'll make the 50,000 on their way to heaven? Good luck.

At one time, many years ago, any person born in Italy HAD to be Catholic.

As if that would be a bad thing? In any event, no one is a Catholic unless they want to be. Then and now. You can go through the motions and think you are or you can embrace the faith fully as well you should. Obviously, if one harbors bad feelings and thoughts about the Church, they will not be in communion with the Church and will not benefit from that relationship.

So Athiests have their feelings hurt just because Nazi's and Communists shared their views on God and attacked Christianity and the Church particularly...and by conservative estimates were resonsible for 100,000,000 deaths (mostly innocent non-combatants who were the easiest to deal with).

I can see why this would disturb them.

Too damn bad. Take ownership of your heritage.

Try reversing the situation. What if a person, including yourself, had been born in the bible belt and HAD to be Baptist? Would you consider that to be a bad thing?

I haven't seen it advertised, but if it's true they're as guilty as YOUR leaders. Since you're aware of it, what do you plan to do about it? WHEN are you going to stop talking to me like you said you would? Hard to believe anything you say.

You liar, I've been giving you links to that for two days now!

You're a hypocrite lady. Your rules only apply to Catholics, but not the people with your same skin color.

No racist remarks, huh? NOW who's lying? And why would I open any of your links? Can't remember offhand if I ever did or not. I am NOT interested in you. Now WHEN are you going to be loyal to your word and stop talking to me? Also - would you care to call me a sl*t to my husband's face? Somehow I don't picture you doing that. And THAT is slander!

P.S. Your daddy is one dumbass lawyer (which I'm betting he isn't one anyway).

Do priest teach anything besides begging people for money?

I use to be scared to death as a kid going to the Catholic church. It needs sunlight.

Priests aren't the only ones who teach. Nuns, monks, brothers and lay folk also teach. Not all catholic churches are the same. Mine is filled with sunlight. It's the church home to like 750 families, and is not the biggest church in town, nor the only one structures as such. Most sermons are not about money. However, some priests, and mostly all nuns, monks and brothers take a vow of poverty. How're they gonna eat, live, pray, and have shelter without asking for donations? I don't know of any non-catholic ministers who take a vow of poverty, so the situation is a bit different.

I don't think that is really an issue...since, except, perhaps for certain Muslims in America, I am not aware of anyone being FORCED to worship any particular faith, particularly as adults.

This is not an Islamic state yet. One has the freedom to worship in the faith of their choice.

But Catholics DO want some of their beliefs made into law - if it were up to them, they would not allow birth control devices/pills/whatever - one small example. I personally don't care what they want.

You bet we do. Catholic's who actually follow Church teachings have a right to express their beliefs and participate in governance just as much as those of different faiths, little faith or no faith. I find it quite strange that orthodox Catholic's are being singled out for being muzzled. It is NOT the Church which has political power in this nation. It is the people...AND Catholics are people too.

I think you DO care what "they want". You want Catholics OUT of public life. That is not fairminded.
