Poll: Does the pope's statement surprise you?

There are 78 comments on the The Washington Post story from Nov 20, 2010, titled Poll: Does the pope's statement surprise you?. In it, The Washington Post reports that:

Pope Benedict XVI says in a new book that condoms can be justified for male prostitutes seeking to stop the spread of HIV, a stunning comment for a church criticized for its opposition to condoms and for a pontiff who has blamed them for making the AIDS crisis worse.

Dear "I can read,"
Silly Goose. I don't own a computer. I use a public Library computer. Don't know who "Homophobe" is. Did you know that my highschool speach professor said that fowl language reflects and empty intellect? Some 30 years later, my life experience has shown this to be true. The Holy Bible says in the book of Proverbs that the words that come out of the mouth reflect the condition of the heart. As your words are fowl and disrespectful, what do you think that reveals to all of us posters here in topix forums about the condition of YOUR heart, mr. "I can read."
When you say the Pope and the Catholic Church are to blame for the aids epidemic in Africa, then show the fowlness and disrespect in your heart by the words you use, I have to tell you, and I think many, many others on these forums will agree, that you cannot be taken seriously, nor be trusted in your judgement or evaluation of others. I thusly don't think anyone will even trust your implied solution for the ills of the African continent.
You are the best evidence anyone can present that the Pope and the Catholic Church are right. In this discussion, which you have turned into a battle between many of us and you, you LOOSE!!!
God Bless you for ever and ever,
Jack Catholic
So you claim condoms dont help stop the spread of AIDS.

To prove this you cited a completely biased catholic propoganda weebsite and claimed you had proof by citing figures from various organisations.

Firstly you claimed that condoms obviously dont work because an increase in condoms hadnt had any effect on those dying of AIDS over a 4 yeare period, conveniently ignoring the fact that HIV takes years to manifest as AIDS and that the people dying of AIDS at hat stage had all contracted HIV before the increase in condom use.

THen you claimed they dont work because AIDS was still increasing when condom use had increased by a tiny 4 condoms per person per year. Clearly a negligible amount.

Then your propoganda machine actually tried to claim that condoms didn't help stop the spread of AIDS because another african country saw a rise in the number of PREGNANT WOMEN with HIV. As a catholic I thought you'd realise the link between condoms and pregnancy but apparently you are only interested in helping spread AIDS rather than decreasing use of contraception which is supposedly the churches stance.

Then you actually claimed that the WHO has the same viewpoint and have said that condoms dont help stop the spread of AIDS.

So you can pretend it was someone elses username you used but the evidence is clear for all to see. You are purely here to annoy others and find the murder of thousands of Africans every year a good subject for you to laugh at others.

No sane person could really believe the crap you have spouted.

Just to prove it I'll ask you three simple questions:

1) Do you honestly believe the barrier method doesn't help, bearing in mind that is exactly what absitinance equates to?

2) Do you think it is right to deliberately lie to people so they accidentally contract a fatal disease when they could easily have avoided it?

3) Does your god want lots of babies born with the HIV virus?

(Cue the wind up merchant ignoring this post and pretendiung it doesn't exist, just like he did on another thread he sullied with his lies and propoganda)

Agreed.'Bye back.
The key thing is the homophobic bigots can't address the substance. It doesn't fit with their brainwashing.

Why does the blathering Pope only think male prostitutes can use condoms (twenty five years too late)?

Why not female prostitutes?(Cos his unconscious sexism is showing, that is, when he's not making overtly misogynistic policies.)

The Franco Catholics similarly cannot acknowledge the other simple, proffered reality: EU and the whole Americas Catholics ignore the sick, Middle Ages' cretin, Ratzi, regarding pre marital sex, divorce, condoms, birth control, abortion and lots more.

Oh well, now the laughable, bigot Pope who obviously mis-spoke on the male prostitute-condom thing, just like he's been mis-speaking on condoms and safe sex for the past quarter century, has amended his remarks - GENIUS!- to say that avoiding AIDS is more important than avoiding condoms - for everyone.

Hallelujah!

Except no Catholics in the developed West are or have been listening to the RCC on sex, birth control, abortion (with the right wing exceptions...till they get pregnant,) masturbation for decades.

When I was in the Air Force (many years ago) I had a Catholic suitemate who told me that it was OK to disobey the pope on some sexual issues (e.g. artificial birth control) because his teachings on that subject were not spoken ex cathedra. Can any of the Catholics out there enlighten me on whether or not what my friend said was correct -- according Catholic teaching.

I don't keep up with the church anymore so I'm not sure of this, but I think birth control is still forbidden. A practicing catholic would know.

My dear child, the use of oral birth control pills is forbidden in the Catholic Church. I know this because I am the Pope! If however you take that birth control pill and hold it between you're knees, you will prevent pregnancy and it will be OK with the Catholic Church. Now my dear child, you're Holy Father is about to tap a keg for tonight's party at the Vatican. God bless you and the only pills I suggest you take is an occasional fish oil, calcium, or vitamin supplement.

Holding the pill between one's knees sounds effective, but what about bow-legged women?

And no, I'm not one of them.

While your intellectual curiosity is admirable, the specifics don't matter. Very few Catholics are paying attention to the Papal Smear or the RCC on that range of issues I listed. Reservations about birth control is just one laughable instance of the superstition they peddle.

LOL! I don't know. What's "one of us?" I'm not much of a joiner.

That post of his last night was the first I've seen of his. It was hilarious. I'm a recovering Catholic so I laugh at the Pope a lot.

Wow! I'm a recovering Catholic also! PopeBennie is funny ALL the time; his humor is actually very clever.

As for the real-life pope, I laugh at him also. He doesn't seem to be consistent at all, among other things. He managed to tick off half the world in record time when he stated that all Protestant churches are not true Christian churches and that Jews are in darkness. Just what the church needed - another monomaniac leader :)

Welcome aboard!
