Pope restates gay marriage ban after California vote

Pope Benedict, speaking a day after a California court ruled in favour of same-sex marriage, firmly restated on Friday the Roman Catholic Church's position that only unions between a man and a woman are moral.

The Catholic Church, and all other churches, are free to decide who they will perform marriage ceremonies for. These are religious-based marriages and will be done according to the rules and beliefs of the particular church. However, the State has the right to grant marriages licenses to whoever they want to by law. These marriages are not religious-based. Many people don't get married in churches, but in city halls, courts or in commercial marriage chapels. The Pope doesn't have the right to tell people who don't get married in a church, that they cannot get married.

Marriage doesn't even have to be called marriage. It can be called civil unions, but still have all the rights, privileges and duties of marriages. So, people married in a church can say they are married and people married in a civil union at city hall can still say they are married. It is just a matter of semantics.

I can imagine that your look will be horrible if you follow these old human laws in the Old Testament strictly. Some of these laws are really out of date and not practical.
