A priest who was consecrated as a bishop in China by the state-sanctioned Catholic Church without Pope Benedict XVI's consent could face excommunication, the Vatican said Tuesday.

China has a right to prefer a local Catholic church to one run by a capitalist prince in Rome. This still counts as "freedom of religion." Mind you, the Pope also has the right not to accept it.
