Of Crosses and Saints

I HAVE HAD many religious discussions with various Church of Christ members through whom I learned that you do not subscribe to having crosses and pictures or statues of saints in religious activities like praying and worshipping ... What others fail to understand are the sound doctrines we Catholics uphold behind these images. Cross, for instance, represents Christ and images signify the saints. So the more vital questions should be: Should you not believe in the saints when the Bible clearly teaches about them? Don't you believe in and pray to Jesus Christ?

Thank you for writing us.

Indeed, the Iglesia ni Cristo does not and will never use crosses and graven images in our religious activities like praying and worshipping. To do so is a blatant offense against the one true God, Who is spirit, without flesh and bones (John 4:24; Luke 24:39). God declared : "Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shall not bow down thyself to them, not serve them for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God ..." (Exod. 20:4-5, King James Version).

God's prohibition concerning this continues up to our time, the Christian Era: "Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone--an image made by man's design and skill" (Acts 17:29, New Internatioal Version).

Nowhere in the Bible can we find any servant of God who has used the image of the cross to worship or pray to Christ. The cross was an instrument of execution--a fact that is supported even by Catholic authorities who stated that "like the guillotine, the noose, or the electric chair', the cross "was the instrument for the execution of the worst criminals" and thus " was the symbol of shame, ignorance and dishonor" (Discourses on the Apostles' Creed, p. 16).

The Almighty God, through the Apostles, commands that every knee should bow at the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Phil. 2:9-11)--not before the instrument used by His executioners who crucified Him to death.

Concerning saints, the Iglesia ni Cristo explicitly believes in them--though not in the same way Catholics do, but as the Bible teaches about them. Catholic authorities define "saint" as "a title properly given to those human members ... recognized by the (Catholic) Church, either traditionally or by formal canonization, as being in heaven" and act as "intercessors with God for the living and for souls in purgatory" (New Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. 12, pp. 852, 962).

Small wonder, then, that Catholics pray to their so-called saints.

The Holy Scriptures, however, differently define "saints" as "those who are sacrificed in Christ Jesus" (I Cor. 1:2, New King James Version). Those who were sacrificed, redeemed or purchased by Christ's blood are inside the Church of Christ (Acts 20:28, Lamsa Translation). All faithful members of the true Church, therefore, are referred to as saints by the Bible.

The Catholic definition of saints as "intercessors with God" to whom one can pray is unchristian and unbiblical. Simple and clear is the teaching of the Bible that there is just one intercessor or mediator:

"For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus" (I Tim. 2:5, NKJV).

The Bible disproves that the holy who have died are already in heaven. Except for Christ, all who have died lie in the grave (Ps. 88:4-5). These include the holy--they do not ascend to heaven right after their death (Acts 2:29, 34; Ps. 86:2) but will remain remain lying in their graves until Judgment Day (Job 14:10-12; II Pet. 3:10, 7).

Apparently, others have failed to understand these sound doctrines enunciated by the Holy Scriptures.

More Poop-sugo garbage. There is even scripture where God commands the making of statues...for example...Exodus 25:18-20. There are other examples as well.

INM and some other religions love to twist and make the claim that there is worship of statues and images. That is entirely FALSE.

Statues and images are REPRESENTATIONS of what people pray to. People are not praying to the statues or images thinking that the statue or image itself has mystical powers.

It's nice that you bring these things to light, Ileus. It shows us all the lies and deceptions of the INM CULT.

Ozzy,

Were the engraved cherubs intended for the Ark of the Covenant, as commanded by God, for worshipping by the nation of Israel??? A BIG NO!!! Show me that these were worshipped by Israel???

Yes, the Roman Catholic Church have doctrines to worship images and statues!!! The doctrine of the Catholic Church regarding the use of sacred images is clearly and fully expressed by the General Council of Trent in the following words:

"The images of Christ, and of His Virgin Mother, and of the other Saints, are to be had and retained, especially in churches;... the honor which is given them is referred to the originals they represent, so that by the images we kiss, and before which we uncover our heads or kneel, we adore Christ and venerate His Saints, whose likeness they represent'..."

Reference:[James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith Of Our Fathers, p. 164]

Catholic authorities do not cite the Bible as the basis for the use of images in their churches. What they cite is the pronouncement of the Council of Trent which is diametrically opposed to what God says in Exodus 20:1-5. It is interesting to note tht Roman Catholics kiss the images of Christ, His Virgin Mother, and other saints. They also uncover their heads or kneel before them. Yet the term used in the case of images (granting without conceding that they are actually the images of Christ) is 'adore' whereas in the case of the "saints" is "venerate". Call it what you may - venerate, adore, or worship, the act of bowing or kneeling before an image is a direct affront to God!

Is venerating an image idolatry? What is idolatry?

"In popular language, idolatry means the worship of images and statues and other handmade objects as God. Strictly speaking, however, idolatry involves the worship of any creature. Thus, emperor-worship is a type of idolatry."

Reference:(John Walsh, S. J., This Is Catholicism, p. 50)

The worship of any creature is idolatry according to Catholic mentors themselves, Thus, emperor worship is a form of idolatry. Do Catholics worship images of saints? Here is an unsolicited evidence from a Catholic book:

"13. Is the worship of saints confined to their person?

"No, it extends also to their relics and images.

"14. What do we call relics?

"We call relics: 1. The remains of the body of a saint who has been canonized or beatified by the Church; 2. The objects which have belonged to the saints, or which have touched their bodies: such as their linen, coffins, etc."

In Pilipino:

Reference:(Catechism Of Christian Doctrine, No. 3, p.87)

What a revelation! Roman Catholics worship not only their saints but also their images and relics! And what are reclics? The remains of the body of a saint - a tooth, a piece of the pelvic bone, a strand of hair, objects that belong to the saint or anything that might have touched the body. These are so numerous but because they belong to the category of relics they must be worshipped by Catholics!

More pasugo pick/chose, omit and ignore!
The actual paragraph reads.

“The images of Christ,
and of His Virgin Mother, and of other Saints, are to be had and
retained, especially in churches; and a due honor and veneration
is to be given to them; not that any divinity or virtue is believed
to be in them for which they are to be honored, or that any prayer
is to be made to them, or that any confidence is to be placed in
them, as was formerly done by the heathens, who placed their
hopes in idols; but because the honor which is given them is
referred to the originals which they represent, so that by the
images which we kiss, and before which we uncover our heads or
kneel, we adore Christ and venerate His Saints, whose likeness
they represent.”

You conveniently omit "not that any divinity or virtue is believed
to be in them"

Debunked yet again!

Good catch, NYG. The lies and deceit are never ending with this cult.

Also, lets not forget the INM statue of their founder rapist Manalo. People visiting it and actually kneeling and praying! Imagine that...kneeling and praying to a rapist! They dont have a statue of Jesus but yet they have one of Felix? Seriously!? Who is their messiah?

Just like so many INM have that same, stupid looking photo of Manalo in their home. Yet, there is no picture of Jesus.

Just making false claims about Catholics or Protestants practicing idolatry proves the lies and deceit of Iglesia ni Manalo.

Probably every religion is guilty of telling lies to their members but cults like Iglesia ni Manalo take it to the extreme.

Many members probably already know this but as been stated many times, they will stay silent on the subjects because they are not allowed to challenge the administration. The fear of expulsion and other multitude of threats come their way.

Just look at how Keating embarrassed Ventilacion with the Pasugo and the pope's tiara. Such blatent lies and no one says boo because they are scared.

And who doesnt believe this is a cult? INM members need to open their eyes to the lies.

The difference with INM, everything they tell their members is a lie. I agree with that part about the fear of repercussions from the administration for speaking out, maybe for the newer converts. But by 2nd and 3rd generation INM are truly brainwashed.

That being said, I bet Elias was born into the cult!

Therefore, Iglesia ni Cristo architecture is amazing and better than anything else.
