Cuban Santeros wary of Pope visit after JPII snub

There are 37 comments on the Palm Beach Post story from Mar 4, 2012, titled Cuban Santeros wary of Pope visit after JPII snub. In it, Palm Beach Post reports that:

But although their Afro-Cuban Santeria religion owes much to Roman Catholicism, many are decidedly unenthusiastic about Pope Benedict XVI's March 26-28 tour of Cuba, even if it is being hailed as a watershed moment for a church seeking to boost its influence on this Communist-run island.

As much as I disagree with the old Cuban guard who run Miami-dade, There are no Santeros among them.

I would let a Santero drown and smile while they went under even if all I had to do was throw them a rope.

"Couto now says that many of those slaughterhouses catered to the Santeria crowd, selling dogs, goats and chickens especially for vodou sacrifices. He routinely found mutilated animal corpses in the area.

"Some of these animals had their eyes missing, their genitalia missing," he says. "Most people think that santeria sacrifices are mainly goats. They don't know that dogs are also tortured too. With the Haitian population, the longer that the animal suffers, the quicker that the evil spirits will come forth"

One can scoff at the cult of Santeros but when you understand that for every 1 Cuban who is Catholic there are 8 Cubans who adhere to this primitive form of worship and belief.

It is a reality of Cuba with which political and organized religions must deal with and seek to understood, not cursed or ignored.

I am assisting a university's Philosophy of Religion's dept. take a group of its students to Cuba to look at the use of magic in religion. The Santaria will be a major focus of their research.

Hermano why do you hurt me like this?

We may not see eye to eye on politics but no need for hostilities and unkind words.

Allow me to extend an olive branch by giving you this free site which allows you to watch episodes of Jersey shore for free.
You can also watch every episode of South park, Family guy and other fine animations .

They are going to neither "assist" or "replace" but to study, first hand, the place and nature of magic in religion. It is an academic pursuit. Your assumptions have no base in reality! I thought you read posts more closely and did not knee-jerk and jump to conslusions!

Religion has been a disaster .

I was raised as a liberal "Catholic" but after having moved to Florida and seeing Christian conservatives , I no longer call myself a Catholic as can't stand these vile hypocrites.

Liger and Toni come to mind.

Problem with you're "reasoning" is that neither Cherokee nor Jose are bible thumpers nor religious .

They certainly do not wear religion on their sleeves which Liger and Toni like hypocrite evangelicals constantly do.
