I'm sure this posting will increase attendance and collections at the Roman Catholic churches in what is one of the most anti-gay cities in the country. Good call, Benny. </SARC>

outstanding Job...

Much like Cardinal Dolan in N.Y.- the Church in its wisdom knows that Catholics in particularly hostile secular enviroments require strong leadership and clarity of vision.

The Church is admired when it stands by its values...and in doing so wins converts. There is no dearth of practincing Catholics in the Bay Area.

Now those Catholics have authentic and strong witness. Look for that witness to bear fruit in the midst of enemy territory.

The church is bold and prideful to think it can oppose the will of its parishioners. It will find our yet again as it has many times before that its power derives not from God but from catholic church-goers, the majority if whom support same sex equal rights including marriage

Often such prognostications are based on surveys of people identifying as Catholic who answer X,Y, or Z on some opinion survey.

However..you did not say "Catholics" but rather "parishioners" - those who formally belong to a parish. One opinion surveys are broken down into regular Mass attendance those surveys reveal a much greater conformity to Church teachings.

The Faithfull are a different breed than those who were simply Baptised Catholic. Catholicism has great "brand loyalty" inasmuch as people who have fallen away from the Church and regular Mass attendance tend still (unlike other denominations) to identify as Catholic when asked about religious affilation.

See there is the problem right there - Bearing Fruits - keep it up Catholics!

By the way the values they stand by seem to be driving people away not bring them in. Falling membership, shuttered churches and closed schools don't exactly back up your claims.

Let's hope the new SF archbishop is as ffective at stopping Marriage Equality as Dolan was in New York!

Marriage Equality coming soon to a state near you!

Catholicism is growing in America, and people move around so Church's shut down in one area and open there doors in another.

Is there any credence to the idea that Catholics abhor birth control because it might interfere with Jesus being born/coming to Earth again - or is that just urban myth? Anyone know for sure?

Every major religion was against Birth Control because they understood how it made sex recreational in peoples minds and broke the link with it procreational purpose.

40 years after the advent of the Pill even its inventor is trying to sound the alarm that "fools rushed in" and its subsequent popularity has led to a demographic 'catastrophe' in the west.

No Christian could EVER support homosexual 'marriage.'

Leviticus 18:22 - You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.
Leviticus 20:13 - If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their blood guiltiness is upon them.
Romans 1:26-27 - For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
I Corinthians 6:9 (NIV)- Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
I Timothy 1:8-11 (NASB)- "But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted."
1 Kings 14:24 And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
Deuteronomy 23:17 There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel.
1 Kings 15:12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
1 Kings 22:46 And the remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father Asa, he took out of the land.
2 Kings 23:7 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove.

Not for a moment.

However, I do believe that humankind, thanks to science and common sense, is on the precipice of a new age of understanding, in which selective bigotry will become a shame of the past.

You do realise that you are advocating witch hunts to separate and define the various levels of "Christians"...? Have the last thousand years taught you NOTHING??
