To bad Pope Francis ISN'T up with the current times........Civil Unions are all but gone and with good reason......besides, the Catholic Church DOESN'T get to decide what the State or Federal Government will do regarding the legal marriages of Same-Sex couples!!!

Lucky for us, Mr. Pope, that what we do is none of your damn business. We prefer our secular law to your pontificating.

I don't think Benedict wants a civil union with his long time secretary. IMO, just friends with benedicks, as the young people say.

Pope Francis needn't have bothered going to bat on his behalf.

I think the RCC advocating civil unions is a great step forward. It means they admit that gays and lesbians are vital members of the community and their families deserve support.

On the other hand, civil whatchamacallits countenance intimate relationships outside of marriage. It seems to me that it would be easier to extend the definition of marriage to include gay people than to extend the idea of blessed relationships beyond marriage.

I assume Francis is not stupid. But has he thought this through?

I think it indicates the rcc is still lagging by decades.

But of course as educated society moves forward these sexually sick laggards have to eventually make some sort of adjustments. No reason to credit them; they simply have no choice at a certain point.

If the rcc ever does something progressive in a timely fashion, then that would be a great step forward. This hint about civil unions is merely them trying to keep pace with the pack, minus a few thousand miles.

Lets make the Pope, half Pope or not give him full credit for his job, How would that do? We will call him the part time pope and limit what powers he has.

Note before I type what I'm going to say:

I take a tone IRL that doesn't translate online; I am excruciatingly strict about showing through my vocal tone that even if I support something by another person's logic, I am not necessarily embracing it, agreeing with their logic, or otherwise supporting them in any way. That's the tone I'm taking here.

What I was going to say:

If one were to see *their* view that "marriage is sacred" = "no one but male and female can marry" as having ANY validity whatsoever, then by logic, civil unions are fine. I see this as non-news, in a sense: It's simply the pope admitting? hinting at? alluding to? something which, by *their* logic, should have been fine all along.

Every state already has civil unions. We call them civil marriages (as opposed to religious marriages which what the Catholic offers.)

Your first sentence is not true.

Your second sentence is untrue and also confused regarding the terminology at a basic level.

CIVIL marriage joins couples in a UNION.

I have always been opposed to creating the concept of a civil union when states already join couples in a union through Civil Marriage. I was once again pointing out that for the pope to open the door to civil unions should actually mean Civil Marriage.

I was also (once again) pointing out the differences between Civil Marriage (a state legal action) and Religious Marriage (a religious rite). The pope, and all other religious leaders, have control over their particular rites of marriage and are not obligated to participate in the government's Civil Marriage contract.

I am sorry if you were not able to discern the nuance of my post.

"Pope Francis" (Jorge Bergoglio) said that it is "RIGHTS" that are causing the acceptance of state sanctioned unions.
Jorge Bergoglio may not accept homosexual marriages within his “Catholic religion” BUT he does accept it as a “RIGHT”.

AND Jorge Bergoglio believes in his RIGHTS also....the right of religious freedom for the Catholic religion...and consequentially also the freedom of all religions.

He is in fact confessing that it is RIGHT to be free to worship ANY 'god'.

BUT the Lord Jesus Christ said that we are to worship the One Lord Creator God and Him Alone, His Will Alone to serve in obedience.

Soon, The One King Jesus Christ will return to rule the earth in power according to and in obedience to the Will of Yehowah Elohim and NOT according to man's first love for his "freedom - RIGHTS".

Your post was incorrect and muddled. It is not helpful.

Not every state has civil unions. And who cares if they did? Civil unions offer very little, except as a tactic, a stepping stone to marriage equality.

Civil unions are different entirely from civil marriages are different from any religious rites attendant to either of the preceding. Let's not get any two of the three mixed up with each other.
