Those who saw Raymond Arroyo interview the Catholic League's William Donohue on EWTN last night heard Mr. Donohue state that the alleged approval by the the Bishops was simply the personal statement of an employee on their staff, and that the Bishops themselves had not approved the Golden Compass. Let's see how this develops.

Let me put it another way: good stories - even those in the Gospels - create hypothetical situations to better illustrate their point. This is the "lie". It's not a poisonous lie - the storyteller just asks you to suspend your disbelief long enough to hear the deeper truth he is trying to illustrate.

The only bad story, to my mind, is a boring one. And ideas are not poison - except to a dictatorship.
