Philip Pullman Realizes - Killing God' Not the Ideal Sales Pitch

“I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief”

Left; Philip Pullman, atheist author . Right: The Golden Compass , atheist movie? Philip Pullman seems, perhaps wisely, to be backtracking a little bit on the whole atheism front. via New York Magazine

My understanding (I haven't seen the film or read the books myself) is that the "God" character to be killed wasn't actually God at all, just a fraud of sorts. My take is that it is a metephor on religion, killing the idea of God that many people hold and use in a dangerous way.

In those books, 'God' doesn't exist. It's an angel who took over everything. Lord Asrieal wants to kill him cause of the church.

“There are no gods.”

I agree. The thing called god commits suicide in the last book. The two child heroes respond to its request for rescue not knowing this will cause its death. The creature knows this will happen.

The remaining storyline issues are then resolved in a very positive manner by the two children. This gives the obvious message we do not require a god to help us live good lives.

Read the books and ignore the misdirection by religious groups.
