We lost the Vietnam war because of Jane Fonda. Right. It must be nice to be able to rationalize without any regard for facts.

You're right about those strident folksingers, though.

Good letter. It's also worth noting that one of the great military thinkers, Sun Tzu (sp?), said that the great general avoids battle unless neccesary, but that he must always marshall his strength. Avoiding uneccesary conflict is always good policy, but peace at all costs is bad public policy. If one wishes to adopt that as their personal morality so be it, but one should not condemn everyone else to the Gulag or the Holocaust to advance peace at all costs. Sometimes such a policy is simply a way of appearing to care while sticking one's head in the sand and a## in the air.

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which occurred 65 years ago, is the perfect example of the moral correctness of fighting evil, and highlights the foolishness of pacifism. This valiant struggle occurred with no hope for military victory, but what it did do was express the willingness of the Jews to fight for their dignity, which I believe inspired the Jews to fight successfully for Israel against all odds. It also allowed several hundred Jews to escape the Ghetto onto the Aryan side, where they were hidden by Polish Gentiles, thereby avoiding being sent to their deaths by the German Nazis. Many then fought in the General Warsaw Uprising a year later, which also succumbed to the overwhelming military might of Nazi Germany, but was considered an inspiration to the Polish Solidarity movement which dealt a decisive blow to Soviet Communist tyranny in Eastern Europe almost 50 years later.

Thanks for your comments I really appreciate them.

Just to respond to Dance for Democracy. I didn't argue that Fonda and Hayden were responsible for us losing Vietnam. I argued they played a huge role in cutting off our support for the anti-communist cause in all of Southeast Asia, which brought about the communist-led genocide.

The fact that during the general Warsaw uprising, the Soviets, after promising assistance, sat on the far side of the river and did nothing, except allow the Nazis to exterminate the Poles, helped to keep the flame of resitance alive in Poland
