This review surprises me in a way, but I can understand why von Rhein concentrated on the violin concerto instead of expounding on the disappointment of the choral part of the program, what with the group's obvious lack of preparation.
I had the impression that Salonen was replacing "interpretation" with speed in both choral works. The Chicago Symphony Chorus gamely tried to make Mr. Wolf look good, and just keep up at the concerts, but the fugues were full of sloppiness and wrong notes. Many phrases were cut short for some reason that didn't sound idiomatic, and I heard very little dynamic attention.
Whose idea was it to use inconsistent and ill-considered Italianate Latin pronunciation?
For all the rather meager fanfare for the "50th anniversary" of the founding of the Chorus (the lame exhibit in the ballroom at Orchestra Hall is embarassing), one wishes the Orchestra still gave the same attention to preparation and detail the Chorus was given under Hillis. There is a lot of talent being wasted in the terrace.
