We learned about a month ago that the U.S. budget deficit for the most recent fiscal year fell to $1.089 trillion,$200 billion smaller than it was last year, and nearly $300 billion smaller than when President Obama took office.

For the right, the complaints stayed the same -- the deficit that exploded under Bush/Cheney was still too high. But regardless of ideology, the fact remains that there's been an enormous drop in the size of the deficit in the first half of the Obama era.

How enormous? Matt Yglesias flagged this item from Investors Business Daily noting a tidbit that's generally ignored in the larger political debate over the nation's finances: "Believe it or not, the federal deficit has fallen faster over the past three years than it has in any such stretch since demobilization from World War II."

As the political world obsesses over the ongoing debt-reduction talks, I hope it's not too much to ask that policymakers remember that the deficit is already shrinking at an aggressive pace.

Far be it from any Republican to acknowledge this!

Legal blacks? As opposed to illegal blacks? I'm not African-American, but a lot of Irish-Americans, German-Americans, and Italian-Americans are far removed from Ireland, Germany, and Italy. And just how long ago were the ancestors of many Anglo-Saxon-Americans in East Anglia or Lower Saxony? Actually, it's been a lot longer than 200 years for some African-Americans. Read the fascinating book "Before the Mayflower" by Lerone Bennet, Jr.

It won't be long before Americans and Hispanics are invading Canada - trying to find a better life.
Canada's liberalism is coming home to roost.
Man, you got that right. America is heading for a world of hurt. Americans think they've been suffering the last 4 years? Obama is just getting started!

Rush is was wrong when he said he hopes Obama fails. I knew Obama would fail.

Obama has been planning to fail from the start.

Agree. Americans and Hispanics (from all over central America and South America) will be flocking into Canada. It will be enough to quickly turn Canadian liberals into Conservatives as they watch their country slowly go up in flames. No more claims of racism out them Canadians to be sure! LOL. All they need is a Canadian Obama to tell them their racist if they don't embrace the end of their way of life. HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Obama's cancer is slowly f*cking the world. That's the plan...

Romney who?
Romney lost because he ran a pathetically embarrassing campaign, was unintelligent, and had a terrible record.
He lost because America saw through his BS. No surprises.
America will never remember Mitt Romney. They've already forgotten him. And good riddance to bad rubbish.
Next.
What a stupid thing to say.

Good point. It is a fact that incumbents have tremendous advantages and usually win, if they run for re-election. That does not necessarily mean that President Obama only won because he was the incumbent (actually, I think that there are many factors-- not just one that caused Governor Romney to lose), but it does mean that a challenger is usually at a disadvantage and if one is going to invest his heart and soul in the cause of any candidate -- especially a challenger -- they need to be emotionally prepared for the possibility that their guy (or gal) might lose. I remember so many people seeming so sure that Bush would lose in '04, or that Clinton would lose in '96. Then, after the election, they say "How can people be so stupid?" As if they have a monopoly on political sophistication. Heck, even President Gerald R. Ford almost made a comeback win against Jimmy Carter in '76, despite all the baggage that he was carrying (Watergate, Nixon pardon, clumsiness, Reagan challenge, 8-year syndrome, etc.), and may very well have done so if he had not halted his momentum with a foolish comment about Eastern Europe in the second presidential debate that year.
