Charles Murray's Gay Marriage Surprise
Political scientist Charles Murray has never backed away from controversy, but usually his opponents have been liberals. Friday, however, he managed to upset conservatives at the annual conference known as CPAC, where thousands of bewildered Republicans gathered to figure out the way forward after their partys 2012 electoral defeat. Murray ditched his prepared remarks on America Coming Apart in favor of an impromptu admonition to fellow conservatives to accept the legalization of both gay marriage and abortion.

The REAL question is, Will the FACTS drive the change in the GOP or will dogma remain the litmus test for Republicans.
Murray, a man known for his word craftsman ship, really missed the chance to just speak plainly to the CPAC attendees. He should have just come out and said, "Let go of gay marriage and abortion and deportation as guiding principles and move on to what the GOP is known BEST for - and that's managing the economy (from the federal level).
But they won't heed his words - no matter how well crafted because the GOP IS more like a religion than a political party. It's an All-or-nothing group now and while they WANT to say the GOP is a party with a big tent, there are CONDITIONS to enter.
The GOP actually has a defacto "don't ask don't tell" policy when it comes to having a different opinion on GOP policies - especially on social issues. That means, you can be pro-gay marriage and be a Republican - you just have to keep it to yourself! The fact that they refused to allow the Log Cabin Republicans at CPAC is proof that the GOP leadership (R. Priebus) remains militaristic in their dogma and philosophies.
Bottom line: The GOP has gone SOOOO far to the right that ANY change in policy or philosophy is seen as a LOSING - not compromise!
And that's why the GOP is seen more as an arm of the religious right and not a political party. You only have to watch the Sunday morning news shows to see and hear the proof of that. We hear alot about the need for compromise, YET, no one wants to either take the first step OR really want to be WILLING to give up on ANYTHING to get something.
That's why we're at a stalemate - and the ONE thing the GOP seems to have totally missed is that the VOTERS are willing to undergo years of economic sacrifices before they will hand over control of the country to religious politicians.
Why? Because it's only going to be a few more years before the hard-right (angry old white men) die off. But, by then, the GOP will have been relegated to a minority party - and lost all their power and influence. Americans have a LONG and POWERFUL memory. Women, minorities and younger voters won't forget all the hate-filled rhetoric (and legislation) promoted by the GOP. So, go ahead Republicans - wait - and pay the ultimate price.
OR! Take your lumps now within the party, and REALLY EXPAND your platform!
