I haven't read any MJ biographies , just starting a discussion. I think he had natural talent but he must of studied James Browns moves and others. I think he must of taking dance lessons at a young age and even had teachers all through his career.

It seems some fans don't want to give credit to anyone but Michael. It doesn't take away from MJ's talent if he had dance teachers , vocal coaches ,muscians who helped him develop his songs and recording engineers and producers that could show him what could be done in the studio.

Dancing was like breathing to him - he was born with the rythem. Later he watched James Brown , Jacky Wilson and others while on tour with his brothers At home he danced with Janet pretending he is Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly. He learned from the Greatest just by watching how they do it. He gave credit to them in his book Moonwalk. But he did not copy - he brought is to another level and made it his own. He was genius - for ever the greatest.

The clown was a hack, He most definitely copied superior dancers like Jackie Wilson and James Brown. But because he was in the eighties MTV era and over exposed, floons with no sense of history tend to believe Wacko invented everything. He did not. He stole songs and gave himself credit, he never played any musical instruments live or in the studio and he lip synced. He couldn't act, he couldn't produce. Instead, he was lucky enough to have Quincy Jones and "Thriller" He made videos but so did every artist.

Of course, that was thirty years ago. It is like going back in time to 1977 when The Bee Gee's and the movie blockbuster "Saturday Night Fever" was popular. I remember it well but the fad passed and things changed. Arena rock and Heavy Metal dominated the eighties. Michael Jackson was only for the five year old set. Breakdancing in tacky parachute pants. Dated crapola.

When Michael Jackson's "Thriller" is put against Prince's "Purple Rain" it is obvious who the clear winner is. Prince was the star of the film, got the box office reciepts for the film, sold the album, played live with instruments, danced, made hit videos, producing and writing everything himself. He even created smash hits for other artists. And he never slept with boys.

Prince wins.

Well he must have learned something form others in person too! I'm sure Fred Astaire took dance lessons 80 or 90 years ago. MJ didn't have large choreograghed dance numbers until 80's after leaving brothers/going solo and had professional dancers.

Michael was an awesome dancing singer since he was very young but he really develop his dancing after he quit Jackson 5 and worked with professional dancers.. * more complex dance routines than he ever did with his brothers.

My take is that MJ "learned" dancing watching James Brown on TV. One of his famous quotes was this, "I remember when I was at six, my mother would get me out of my bed to watch James Brown on the T.A.M.I. Show" and he said JB basically inspired him to be a performer. He sometimes mentioned Jackie Wilson (like he did at the Grammys in '84) and Joe Tex was often mentioned as another influence (because MJ first saw Joe Tex grabbing his microphone and then doing kickstands with it before he saw James do it).

Then in the '70s, he got obsessed with mimes and Bob Fosse. Most of his 360 degree spins after around 1973 were influenced more or less by Fosse while his dancing post-1973 was influenced by mimes and Soul Train dancers. He learned "The Robot" from one ST dancer and the "backslide" (the dance that would later be erroneously cemented in the media as "the moonwalk") by two breakdancers that were already mentioned. Rest of his career, he focused on Broadway type dance choruses (another Fosse trait mixed with Fred Astaire ripoffs - Smooth Criminal) and, later, robotic dancing (inspired by his younger sister, Janet). If you dissected his live shows, it was very calculated almost. I watched one show from the HIStory tour and I never seen an artist as detached as MJ, least Janet and Madonna were more open to their fans, MJ seemed detached from everything else.

His egg donor used to brag about when MJ was one years old how he would "move in rhythm" unlike her other children. She was the one that got Joseph to put MJ in his brothers' group in the first place.

Badman post seems to be the most educational even though he isn't diehard fan. I don't care much for blind alleigence fans have that give MJ all the credit for his dance routines and music without given any credit to muscians producers, dancers etc., Also Octopus calling MJ a hack is just trash talk to piss off fans!=0

Wacko was the one that was mentally ill. In my opinion, he really wasn't that talented. Prince was way better. I call the clown a hack because he lip synced, didn't play instruments, stole songs and claimed that he wrote them when he didn't, couldn't produce, couldn't act and was a over rated dancer. He made a hilarious clown though.
