Martin Sheen stars as an animated square in “Flatland: The Movie”
Austin, TX— July 25th, 2006
Award winning actor Martin Sheen is set to join the cast of “FLATLAND: THE MOVIE” as the film's lead Arthur Square.“FLATLAND: THE MOVIE” is an animated film currently in production in Austin, Texas.
Most recently celebrated for his presidency in "The West Wing", Sheen's many film credits include "The American President” and "Apocalypse Now".
"Martin Sheen was our first choice to play the lead." Director Jeffrey Travis said, "He has the perfect voice and sensibilities to play the role of Arthur, a grandfatherly figure who courageously questions the prevailing self-proclaimed authorities in Flatland in his quest for truth”.
The project is based on Edwin A. Abbott’s classic novel Flatland: A Romance
of Many Dimensions. Flatland is a world that exists entirely on a two-dimensional plane. All different kinds of shapes live, work and play in this world. This is the story of how Arthur Square and his six-sided granddaughter Hex travel to a world that most Flatlanders consider ridiculous and blasphemous -- the 3rd dimension.
Flatland will be a thirty minute animated story that includes action, drama, and geometry lessons. This heartfelt movie challenges audiences to grasp the limitations of our own assumptions about reality, and to think about the problem of higher dimensions.
"Martin's participation in the movie is a great benefit to the production because of his immense talent and passion." producer Seth Caplan said. "We believe FLATLAND: THE MOVIE will help motivate the next generation of innovative mathematicians and scientists by being not only entertaining, but also inspiring."
The project will be completed in the fall of 2006. The program is part of an educational DVD to be used by teachers in the classroom.

No matter how much you change the original story, please - the square cannot possibly have a six-sided granddaughter! The whole gender aspect of the story would be ruined if a woman had sides! The women were (brainless) lines in Abbott's fantasy. So please - let the grandchild be a boy, HEX. You don't have to be P.C.
