Embossed Metal Frame

MANY years ago, I saw Martha Stewart emboss a mirror's frame. She used hot glue to represent vines and leaves directly on the frame, and then used some sort of metal (that I recall as being something like roof-flashing!) to cover the now-decorated frame. Once the metal was in place, she somehow was able to see the shapes made by the hot glue...brayer perhaps?
In any event, I need specifics on what type of metal was or could be used, and how exactly the underlying shapes were exposed. I think Tim Holtz might have been involved with this project, but I can't find anything from his resources either! HELP!
