Celebrating the light and fire caused from striking of flints is an ancient tradition. Mithra is said to be forced out of a rock, wearing the Phyrygian cap holding a dagger and a torch of light. Mithra's birth is celebrated on the Winter Solstice.

Mithraism was popular in the Roman Empire with many Emperors following, not just the populace. It had seven sacraments, the same as the Catholic Church, baptism, and communion with bread and water. The Eucharist hosts were signed with a cross, an ancient phallic symbol which originated in Egypt, and the Egyptian cross (the ankh) still shows the original form which included the female symbol.

”More important even than the Vedic and Zoroastrian influences, the Mithras cult had a strong impact on Christianity. Mithras was the son of Ormuzd, and as a god of light himself, he engaged the powers of darkness, Ahriman and his host, in a bitter struggle. Mithras triumphed and cast his adversaries into the nether world. Mithras, too, raised the dead and will find them at the end of time. He, too, will relegate the wicked to hell and establish the millennial kingdom.[...]

Drews, too, believes that it was the influence of Persian, notably Mithraic, thought which led to the gradual transformation of the human figure of Jesus into a Godhead. Robertson thinks that the rock-tomb resurrection of Jesus is a direct transference of Mithras' rock birth, and that Jesus also became a sun-god like Mithras, so that they share their birthday at the winter solstice. Robertson, Niemojewski, Volney and others assert that as son-god Jesus had twelve apostles representing the twelve houses of the zodiac.”

Below are the opening lines to several of you recent posts:

Again Micah, I STRONGLY dis agree...

I am disappointed Hip- you missed my point.

No offence but who are you to DEMAND anything?

You know I keep seeing all this anger and retribution toward the God

And what marvel comic book unreliable source are you choosing to believe and recite as truth

By the way i changed my name from what in thuh to Gee-whiz kid...

Maybe it's just me but you come off as a pompous jerk. You say a lot of things but you do not seem to have a great deal of knowledge, just a glib style, and a crass approach.

I doubt that your knowledge of the bible is equal to many who post on these sites, much less, greater than.

In your new name, I assume you mean whiz in the sense of, " I gotta take a whiz...", with "kid" meaning small; so that whiz kid means a "little pisser". That's kind of appropriate.

"Jesus Versus Christianity" by Alfred Reynolds, p78

Zoroastrianism
The roots of Mithraism go back to Zoroastrianism, a Persian religion that became popular in Greece from 390BCE. It placed Mithras in the role of a deity equal to the sun god. Its priests were Magi; the same Magi assumed to visit Bethlehem when Jesus was born.

www.avesta.org/avesta.html - Zoroastrian Archives
www.Zarathushtra.com
Zarathustra, a Zoroastrian magi, had predicted a Messiah, and Jesus' birth was assumed by Paul to be his possible arrival. In the Persian holy texts, the Avesta, this Messiah will appear at the end of time and bring the triumph of good over evil and make a potion of immortality for mankind from the fat of a great bull mixed with Hamoa juice.

Judgement
The faithful to the Mithra believed they would live in bliss after death until the Judgement of mankind. Mithra would then unlock Paradise for the faithful and come to Earth and kill all the unbaptised. All the dead would return from their graves to be judged.

All the wicked, the rejected and unbaptised would be destroyed by Mithra by fire, and those accepted into Paradise would live with Mithra forever with eternal life. After the annihilation of the unfaithful Mithra ascends into heaven, at the end of time, after his Messiah has brought salvation to the saved, in a chariot of fire.

3. Emperor Constantine officially fused Mithraism and Christianity
"During the 1st century BC, a cult of Mithra, made much progress in Rome, after enduring persecution, when some Emperors adopted the religion... Mithra became very popular among the Roman legionaries and later even among the Emperors. The worship of Mithra was first recognized by Emperor Aurelian and he instituted the cult of "Sol Invictus" or the Invincible Sun. Emperor Diocletian also a worshipper of Mithra, the Sun God, burned much of the Christian scriptures in 307 A.D.
This enabled Emperor Constantine to merge the cult of Mithra with that of Christianity that was developing much. He declared himself a Christian but at the same time
maintained his ties to the Mithra cult. He retained the title "Pontifus Maximus" the high priest. On his coins were inscribed: "Sol Invicto comiti" which means, commited to the invincible sun. This new blend of the two faiths, he officially proclaimed as Christianity. Christianity spread all over the Roman empire and Eastern Europe by massive persecution and brought and end to a variety of religions that flourished there.[...]

Until the fourth century, Mithra and Christianity were distinct but after Constantine, the two cults were blended to form the new faith that was to conquer most of the world."

saiah 53 does not point to any Messiah. It never was intended to do so, and doesn't miraculously become so just because Paul wants it so. I don't believe you have read the entire book, else you would have some comment or rebuttal to the argument underlying that contention. Instead you flit off into broad delusions of grandeur, which does give pause. This is a common evasion tactic, and I'd hate to think that's what you're doing, but it sure looks like it. I'm not sure there's any point to further discussion until you have actually read the material - not just the selected Sunday School Xtian catechisms. Let me know when you have read Isaiah from 1 to 66. I look forward to an earnest discussion of the so-called Messianic prophecies, but not unless you've done your homework.

*sigh* this is the whole point. There is no proof yet I should take it for a fact that 'He' is in heaven and that every breath I take is 'his' work.
It's really not a matter of who I am to not believe this shit. There is no evidence for it but lots of evidence to the contrary. so it is a fact that there is no god.
Believe me, I'd rather *prefer* to have some sort of SuperDaddy in the sky to help me out when I suffer but fact is there is no such thing. So you are wrong when you say that even if there was a proof I'd go to great lenghts to still not believe or that I'm afraid of something.

I renounced the false prophet jesus and the pagan christian god when I was in 3rd grade when my Sunday school teacher told me my best friend, a Hindu, was going to hell because he didn't believe in jesus or the christian god. She also told me that all the Hindus in India and all the Buddhists in China were all also going to hell. Frankly I couldn't accept something so ridiculously absurd so after about 10 seconds of thought I renounced my pagan ways and declared to my Sunday school teacher that I no longer believed in her god.

My guess is he's no more or no less than Thomas was. And Thomas had the advantage of walking with Jesus for 3 years and witnessing the miracles. I couldn't see how God could begrudge anyone of wanting proof, when his own disciples needed it time and time again.

In christs last hours Peter denied him 3 times even after all he had seen. Even though he was foretold of these events hours before they happened. Makes ya think don't it.

I'm beginning to agree with Hipgnosis, I don't think you've read Isaiah, nor the majority of the OT, especially the Pentetauch. If you had you couldn't say the mythological Gods were any worse than the christian God. In fact as Micah points out they were eerily similar.

I'm not trying to get you to agree with me, you asked why I believed what I did and I answered.
I think life is more interesting with myths and legends and stories. we learn from the past and we can learn valuable lessons from myths and legends, so what is wrong with that? I
I believe in God, I try to live a good life, but I, as a cancer patient, do what my doc tells me to do. I don't have an escrow account on my house, so I put aside $ every month to pay my property tax and insurance, I don't wait til January and pray for God to cover my taxes. I don't think or expect God to do everything for me.

NO offence...I see it must have taken you a long time to think/write this out but....in the end it is the biggest pile of po-dunk I have ever read concerning Saul of Tarsus/Apostle Paul... For one he was a Pharisee under I think Gamaliel, which if you know ANYTHING, you'd know what it took to be a Pharisee... he worked and was acknowledged for his labor AGAINST the christian church or "The Way" as it ws first called. And this is supported not only by the biblical accounts but by Josephus the historians and at least a dozen or more secular writings and manuscripts...(which may not sound like a lot but keep in mind there are only like 4 partial letters/manuscripts of Cleopatra in Egypt and even LESS concerning Plato!!!) So sorry to say the evidence of the truth is stacked AGAINST you and your 'research.' Thi sis the thing that absolutely AMAZES me...you would rather believe this half cocked, twisted theory but disregard the simple, LOVING, blatant truth...one HAS to wonder WHY???? Honestly, I don't get it... Blessings to you micah, seriously, I don't mean to come off like I know EVERYTHING, but I will defend what IS true against a lie if I know it and I hope you find what your looking for...I am guessing you are a seeker of truth, you're here on this thread...so I hope you find it...God Bless you in your journey.

So the truth of YOUR heart is exposed here... no, my goal is NOT to just have eternal life, but I want to spend eternity with Jesus in the kingdom He purposed for us ALL to live in....one where ALL the longings of our hearts are...THis place quite franlly sucks, all the sin and death and yuk! I want to live forever with my friends and family and you, and my God. I WANT to see Him in His glory! it was just a smart a** answer to someone who obviously is angry about something someone has done to him/her and they interpret it as Gods fault...I can't blame them too much, I've been there myself...heck I'm living there right now, angry at God for what so called 'christians' did to me... but in the end I Have to trust it is NOT His fault....He does truly love us all...have you ever built something, drawn a picture, painted a fence and felt proud of it? Was there ANYTHING in your mind when you admired it that made you want to destroy it? So why would God WANT to destroy any one of his Beautiful creations? He desires that ALL would come to repentance,(acknowledge we are sinners) and He will take care of the rest... That's what I believe the bible teaches, that is the God I serve...sometimes VERY badly and quite honestly, WHY He would choose to love a jerk like me I don't know...I want to go home and find out!!! I'm just a poor beggar, letting other beggars know where I found bread...Wont you come along?

So then you think/agree that mankind over the years invented a god to control the people by imposing upon them a littany of rules and regulations and feasts, and rituals that NOBODY could ever keep and then 'prophesy' to those people that someday this god would come and fulfill it all for them... meanwhile the rest of the world around those people were worshipping other gods with far less standards and more fleshly appealing rituals like temple prostitution, all the while marching thru the desrt in circles literally watching a generation die along the way to...well no where... and then being told to go into battles that they won/ they lost/ they conquered/got defeated so many times their minds must have been blown away, look how upset our coountry is at Geaorge Bush for the war only 5-6 years into it these people were GENERATIONS into it and still no permanent place to call home living in tents and then after I cant tell you how many years FINALLY get a piece of real estate they can call home for awhile to be told to build this GIGANTIC, elaborate temple in honor of this god only to be dispersed and have it destroyed and thrown into exile for 70 additional years... and well quite frankly the HORROR story goes on for these people who are by now despised in all the world for being such freaks with this god they invented...You don't think that some of the rulers would have decided along the way that MAYBE we should re-invent this god... I mean the rest of the world is not in utter chaos, how are they controlling their people? Especially when ALL of the leaders of those people were side by side through the desert watching their brothers, sisters, mothers die in the wilderness...you don't think they would have changed the rules a bit??? I confidently say again, ANYONE who thinks for a fraction of a second or longer that mankind 'invented' this God...I'd have to conclude that that person is either ignorant and does not want to face the truth, doesn't understand basic human behavior, is unaware of world history and biblical history, or are knee depp in rebellion like a donkey with their feet dug in refusing to believe even the most basic truths.... NO one would ever invent THIS God...I'm telling you think about it...basic logic will eliminate the 'invention theory' You can disagree in the end and say there is NO god...but you cannot claim this one was invented...sorry.

Yep, you're right...it's called faith and I am sorry to report- you or anyone else on this planet will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, find any PROOF. God for whatever reason,(I have a theory...but its just a theory so my pea brain can understand), but for whatever reason God has set it up this way and that's all ANY of us are gonna ever get....look at the facts and trust/believe/have faith or not...The CHOICE, as always, is yours.... Good luck and God Bless

You know...I REALLY get burned up when people like that say the dumbest things like you are relaying here...taking a position as a Sunday school teacher and using it to proclaim terrible teaching over impressionable young kids is WRONG. I am sorry you endured that...I can seriously see why that would make you reject Jesus...if that was the way He was portrayed to me I don't think I would have followed Him either... I hope you can someday give Him another chance... The Jesus I believe in is the one from the bible, but He preaches Love and forgiveness and hope to the outcast and downtrodden to the alien and the stranger...He is a God of great love and joy and peace...Everyone gets so hung up on the hell issue- yes there is a hell, but He made a way for EVERYBODY to not have to go there...and for those who never have heard His name, there is hope for them too... He truly is a God who cares...for the WHOLE world, not just those who reead the bible everyday and then go out and thumop others in the head... THAT is NOT the God of the Bible...thanks for the post...God Bless!!!
