Now both ladies have mastered whitsle but i think mariah has the more stronger voice and minnie has the more soulful, beautiful and louder voice. Minnie notes are higher according to BET but mariah can sing a little lower than minnie. They both have 5 octave ranges. Minnie holds the record beating out the likes of barbra streisand of holding the longest note ever on a song which was 32.43 seconds. Mariah voice started to die away when she reached 30 but minnie capt her voice until her death. Who do you think is the best between these two and remember than minnie is dead so lets have respect.

Minnie by far has the best whistle tone. Her whistle never sounded pinched or forced it just came out naturally. Mariah's whistle register is nice but not as fluid and pure as Minnie's.

Minnie is now and will always be the creator of the whistle tone register in pop music. She mastered and produced all of the notes she sand by herself. Mariah is just a better singer all around. Minnies technique is rather nasally and when she sings full voice has no where near the power or the drive mariah has around middle C. Mariah can belt out high F#'s as well as middle F in the same fashion. Minnies has a week voice but when she holds a high notes she has mastered the intensity. I believe the highest note she has recorded was an A(b)in "Memory Lane".
One the highest notes Mariah sings is actual in her live version of Emotions where she sings the high F goes down a half step to high E and jumps a whole step to high G(b). She has amazing control but i must say Minnie is noted as having better diction in her whistle tone register. In some instences you can hear her saying whole words in whistle tone. All in all both these women are amazing singers but there techniques are slightly varied.

Can anyone name a song other than 'Loving You' by Minnie Ripperton (without looking it up!)
probably not!
She was a one hit wonder.
there's no way you can compare Mariah or anyone else to Minnie unless there are other one hit wonders that hit the whistle register (which their probably were).

I think Minnie used her's more in her songs according to her emotion. Songs like 'Baby, the Love I Have" just seems like she sang it more than her trying to pitch.
Mariah has a more control voice when it comes to just singing.
But all in all, I would go for Minnie, cos she brings the whistle register into jazz, rnb and funk. Admirable.

Minnie is set apart from Mariah and others who sing in the whistle register because she had the abilty to enumate (articulate words and phrases and/or instruments in the superhigh register). Watch Minnie's live performances of Lovin'You on You Tube. She clearly articulates these words: "more than just..." in the whistle register. You can understand those words being stated in that superhigh register. You can't understand any words or phrases that Mariah and others are saying when they are in the superhigh whistle range! That's the technique that is unique to Minnie.

I'am a #1 fan of Minnie Riperton I was born in 1971. I have been listening to Minnie since I was 5 years, Minnie left in me a legacy of her music and it will never leave my soul and heart, every time I hear her music I hear a whisper of an angelic voice singing from this woman. You can not compare Mariah carey to Minnie Riperton, Mariah can not touch Minnie when it comes to singing even though she is gone from this earth but her music is not! Minnie makes me cry and she melts my soul also I drift into an trans of peace it it do undcriable to say how her music touch all I can say I think of heaven. Once do not compare Mariah voice to Minnie, Mariah sounds nice but she do not have that voice that would put you into a trans like Minnie. Mariah wish she can sound that GOOD!
Love you Minnie

Minnie Ripperton was a one hit wonder.

Mariah put Minnie on the map cos if Mariah hadnt mentioned Minnie as an influence for her whistle register then the only thing people would remember would be the song 'loving you' without knowing who sang it!

I disagree, Minnie Riperton's name has always been on the map since her single "Loving You" went to #1 on the pop charts.

Minnie will always be remembered as the originator of the whistle register in pop music, not Mariah Scary.

And I think Chaka Khan and Patti LaBelle will always be remembered as the true originators who put in every kind of gospel run and trill and melisma into pop music, not Mariah Scary.

So when people say that X-Tina's trying to sound like Mariah Scary, I believe they're wrong, I really do think that both Scary and X-Tina are trying to sound like Patti LaBelle and Chaka Khan who are the true originators of that style of singing in pop music.

Yeah, but I've listened to Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson albums, in my opinion they hardly did any of the vocal runs and trills that Patti LaBelle and Chaka Khan have been doing on their albums. And so all I'm saying is Chaka and Patti came first way before Mariah and Christina signed their record deals.

Yea they did but when interviewed Chrtisitna, Leona and CO cite Mariah and Whitney as their influences not minnie, or patti or Chaka.
