It is such a shame to read such negative statements regarding two people who obviously had such troubled lives. Unfortunately neither one is here to defend themselves. But it's evident to me that Hector LaVoe was not a good judge of character if he stayed with the undesirable Puchi all those years.

70sman4ever - I don't know why but this is just the 3rd week and El Cantante has already been reduced to 374 theatres,(minus 163), so instead of expanding to MORE theatres they are reducing, so there must not be a word-of-mouth working for it. Remember, they had that BIG showing the 1st weekend, but the next weekend it dropped 57%.

I'm shocked the star power of JLO and Marc Anthony alone didn't keep a steady flow in the theatres, just like with Anne Hathaway's movie "Becoming Jane". It started out in only 100 theatres and the word-of-mouth has caused the movie to expand to 1,186 theatres, and she's carrying that movie alone. So strange that didn't happen with El Cantante.

Before i start I should say that before i heard of The movie "El Cantante" I knew very little of Hector Lavoe. I knew a few songs which i do love, but did not know much about his personal life. I like the song that says" Yo naci en P rico, y en Nueva york me crie" love it.

being played while i lived in PR for 8 years.
Now, Today i hear all these horrible stories about this man. Most of them on the Net. I read
he had two women in his life that made him a father about the same time. carmen and Nilda "puchy". I have never really heard much about carmen. I hear a lot of negative stories about this "puchy" character. For those who really knew these people. Can you please write a little about them. The movie with jen and marc portray Hector as a drug addict, which i heard is pretty accurate from people that actually knew him. They say puchy was never really on concerts or supporting hector.

Antes que nada quiero decir que antes de que saliera esta pelicula del cantante, era muy poco lo que sabia de Hector Lavoe. Habia escuchado algunas canciones y una de mis favorites "yo nací en Puerto Rico. Hoy dia estoy en mis 30 y tantos.
y pues recuerda sus canciones con mucho cariño.
Apenas vivi en Puerto Rico 8 años, pero suficientes para yo aprender de la cultura de P rico y la de los puertoriqueños en Nueva york.
Hoy dia escucho estas horribles historias que yo mismo eh visto en el "internet", muchas por gente que si conocio a Hector, algunas por musicos que trabajaron con el. Es una pena que esta historia sea tan triste o que se haya convertido en una historia con un triste final. Hector tuvo dos mujeres importantes en su vida, no se si hubieron otras antes o despues. Pues al final "puchy ni estuvo a su lado en los peores momentos de su vida. Para esas personas que saben o conocieron mas a Hector o mas de esta historia, Por Favor escriban. Una de las peliculas que se han rodado muestra a un hector con problemas de adiccion a las drogas, algo que se dice fue en realidad su vida. Y pues esta ultima pelicula es un recuento por las mismas palabras de "puchy" la cual la pelicula de jen con marc es basada. No es basada en cosas que dijo Hector sino puchy. Ahora hay que esperar la version de Hector, si es que existe algun recuento en sus propias palabras.

The song that you are referring to is not a sung by Hector Lavoe. Angel Canales sang the song and it's called "Lejos de Ti". Hector Lavoe was and still is the best salsa singer that ever existted. Puchi was his wife and she was partly responsible for his downfall along with many others who, of course, exploited him. Sure, Hector was an addict and he should be held responsible for his actions to some extent, but Puchi did not do anything to help the situation either.

Vaya mi gente!!! I knoew J_Low Class' movie was gonna be a BIG BOMB to start! Let's face it, these are two stupid so-called Newyoricans who have NO historical appreciation and used the common stereotypes that their generation was brainwashed with about the 70s and made stupid idiots of themselves doing so in the process! we all should know better. Hector LaVoe was, is , and will ALWAYS be Salsa's King. Fortunately, at the age of 32, I was NOT brainwashed to think that the 70s was all about drugs and tacky clothing. Hey here's a surprise to you all, my moniker says it all. I AM the 70s Man. I live it, dance it, and wear it every fucking day of my life! Just because Marc Anthony can sing, still doesn't mean he was the RIGHT PERSON to play Hector Lavoe. He looked gaunt, skinney and frail when he was on stage as Hector. I remember when he was swinging his arms on stage and they looked like two toothpics. He didn't have enough respect for Hector Lavoe to even try and gain weight for the part. He didn't even try to change his voice to sound like Hector. Hector had a thick Puerto Rican accent, but Marc Anthony talked in his own voice. El Cantante was nothing but a sham. "The Marc Anthony and JLO show". No wonder its going to DVD so soon.

I watched the DVD last nite, the only thing I enjoyed was the music cuz I was THERE in NY when Hector & Willie were coming to their own! Marc Anthony (tho a great singer) is definitely NOT Hector LaVoe and yes there were alot of discprepancies with "Putchie". I didn't care for her character (whether she was real or not) cuz she dipicted PR ladies as foul mouth talking ho's! I certainly didn't talk like that then nor do I now! All in all I felt this film dipicted PRs in a negative light, another reason giving to the media and throughout the world to keep us down. This is one PR who will never be put down and I have certainly arised above it all. Why isn't a movie dipicted as a success stories for PRs???? There..........I had my say. Don't be hating........after all this is a free country.

I saw the movie in a theather, and I too only like the music, which of course was hot. I do not know much about Hector and unfortunately I still don't. After the movie, i ended up more confused and with more questions that need to be answered. Basically, this movie was all about Puchi. I believe there will be another Lavoe movie in the near future, so maybe that would be a more positive film.

after watching part of the movie and doing a bit of research on the internet, I believe that both Marc and Jlo did a good job in this movie. However, maybe giving a little more details of all the tragic events in his life and how he started his career might have helped to make it a much better movie.

I can't wait to see the one with Raul Carbonell.
