There are 2 comments on the Chicago Tribune story from Jul 3, 2008, titled Chicago tenor sax. In it, Chicago Tribune reports that:

Why the tenor sax and not the piano or the drums, instruments that have catapulted uncounted Chicagoans to musical glory? For starters, the seminal jazz tenorist Bud Freeman was a Chicagoan .

What a bunch of BS. I've been a musician, and a Chicagoan, all my life, and this is the first I've ever heard about "Chicago style tenor sax". In fact, sax used to be one of the instruments I doubled on. Where do these yuppie "journalists" come up with this stuff ?

Well, it's really unfortunate that you aren't familiar with one of the seminal musical styles of the city you claim so much connection with. As the article summarizes, tenor sax has played a large part in Chicago's jazz scene. If you haven't heard the players mentioned in the article, then you really need to get out to a library or amazon.com and catch up.

The Chicago tenor style is based very heavily in a deep, blues-rich sound. The players usually have a very large sound and possess dazzling technique. I'm a big fan of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin's quintet as well as Gene Ammons various ensembles. Hell, on Ammons' "The Big Sound" you get to hear a young Coltrane on alto.

Hope you get to discover something new about your hometown!
