Letters: Welfare abuse

There are 45 comments on the El Paso Times story from Nov 25, 2010, titled Letters: Welfare abuse. In it, El Paso Times reports that:

State Rep. Chisum stated that Medicaid and CHIP are bankrupting Texas and that the Heritage Foundation said that if the state were to opt out, Texas would save $60 billion between 2013-2019. Why not first try to eliminate any abuse within those programs and see just how much Texas could save? But don't stop there.

Too true Mr. Valenzuela! It is time that the residence requirement was met for children to attend our schools. I know of parents who live in NM and bring their kids to school in El Paso because they work here. They use a friend or relatives address so they won't have to drive so far if the child gets sick at school. Those people and the ones coming from Mexico should be paying tuition fees for not living in the district. I am also very upset about the students from Juarez who get in-state tuition at the STATE University. UTEP is also financed by our taxes and if someone from Anthony NM has to pay out of state tuition then so should the Mexican nationals.

Rep. Chisum (Far Right-Pampa) is one of the most conservative members of the Texas legislature and the Heritage Foundation (established with funding from radical Republican billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife) is one of the most conservative promoters of the radical right agenda.

Wise folks will take their propaganda with a massive grain of salt.

Mandatory sterilizations instead of food stamps. It's ridiculous to encourage out-of-control immigration by paying people to come here and breed welfare babies. It's time to slash these programs that are just increasing poverty rates.

Just do an archive search of articles in the Times about the wait times at the bridges and you will find they even have "student" lines for all the students crossing every morning to go to school. Those are not college students and those are not student who hold F1 visas. Those are people living in Mexico and going to school in the US who cross EVERYDAY thru the same pedestian line at our international bridges.

Overhaul the system (CHIP/MEDICAID) to put safeguards in place to weed out those divorced moms who sign up for one or the other even though the children are already covered under Dad's health insurance policy. CHIP/MEDICAID are for those families who have NO OTHER means to provide health insurance for their children, not to cover children that already have health insurance coverage. Such overhaul should include making the parent pay back all State monies unneccisarily expended on their children.

It's been the government policy since the 60's. It is beyond ridiculous if you are coming from a common sense perspective, but it's wildly successful if your intent is to breed generations of dependable votes for more government. It all goes back to what has been said about our form of government being temporary in nature. Once the people learn they can vote themselves benefits from the public treasury, the government must fail due to financial insolvency. We have passed the tipping point. There is no going back.
This will NOT end well.

Should we consider the most liberal members of the Texas legislature and the foundations whose funding comes from George Soros, one of the most liberal promoters of the radical left agenda, and his ilk with an equally ponderous grain of salt also? Or should we consider your objection only in order to be considered wise?

The unfortunate part of the problem is that the United States Government requires that we give an education to the children of illegal immigrants who were born here even if they do not live here with their parents. THe reason their parents aren't here is they got caught by Immigration officers and officially deported. We give the ones that live here medical treatment and food stamps (Lone Star Cards) instead of making them show their papers. We also have a lot of welfare cheats that drain the funds.

the people at the housing authority do not care if people abuse. go to any project and you will see there are more people living there than are allowed (lots of boyfriends, illegals, etc). same goes for foodstamps (no, the cards didn't eliminate sale of foodstamps, they simply take people on shopping sprees). you want specifics, go by all the projects on paisano. new cars. lots of drinking. gangs. gangster clothes.

the people the work at housing don't care 'cause as long as tehre are a lot of people in the projects, they have a job.

these project apartments should be sold at low payments for 50 yrs to these people and no break and taxpayer fixes. tehy don't take care of these places,'cause "it's free".

where is the investigation dept? where's the housing authority (or lack there of). where's the immigration?

Yes, like in El Paso, the government dependent are very close to outnumbering the taxpayers if they haven't already. It's foolish to make breeding so very profitable to the least capable in our society (and of course those from other societies that come here to breed and live off government handouts).

In exchange for foodstamps, WIC, government housing, free utilities and all the many others, the recipient should agree to surgical sterilization. The goal should be to get off welfare and having baby after baby isn't going to get them off welfare. Instead they are rewarded for having more babies when they could never afford even the first one.

Of course this wouldn't be forced. If someone doesn't want to be sterilized, then the option would be to get a job or live off relatives.

FEDUP,

I think you are being a little harsh there buddy. I have no issue with people living off of the government and taking advantage of the situation, as long as I don't get taxed to help pay the bill.

Since you are very touchy, feely and caring, you might want to volunteer all of your earnings to uncle sam for the sole purpose of helping people. To me, leave my money alone. I work for it, and so can others.

And our country is going down the shithole,'cause there are too many nice people who say "spend" "spend" "spend" "help" "be nice" "be caring".

The country has a budget. The country also has a bunch of needless crap that they pay for including welfare and many other things to include cops and federal jobs. Just like any person with a budget, if you can't afford it, get rid of it.

Talk about oversimplifications and generalizations. All I gotta say is do some research before you come in here talk shyt, as you really look stupid - and also work on your grammar and spelling, as it totally sucks.

Excellent idea. There needs to be a separate and completely voluntary tax that liberals can give their money to provide for the welfare class.

Poverty is increasing because the welfare system encourages unwed women to have baby after baby, and especially encourages people to leave their own country to come here and breed.

It's getting very much out of control.

Yeh that'll work. Then let all those who pay in, continue to buy all the sudsidized food we all get now and let all those that don't, shell out half their incomes in order to eat.
Sounds fair to me.

Yep, thank you. All this spending and spending on poverty and the poverty rates just go up. It's not working the way we're doing it. It's time to stop wasting taxpayer money on these ridiculous welfare programs and look for better solutions. Tubal ligation and vasectomies would work.

Just take a peak into any welfare office sometime and you'd have to look long and hard to find a blind person or quadriplegiac. The welfare offices are filled with very able-bodied pregnant women. We're doing reverse Darwinism by paying these people to breed, the least capable in our society (and from other societies).

Do you double as a substitute english teacher when not working for the Housing Authority? Why don't you educate us on what employees of the Housing group do on a daily basis? Tell us a little about the women living in housing who are not here legally, but have American born kids. Tell us about the women living in these with live-in boyfriends and kids above the age of 18. Tell us about the people collecting foodstamps who do not really need them and sell them 2 for 1 to anyone wanting to go on a shopping spree. Tell us about those collecting welfare who don't work and have no interest in working. Tell us about abuses of the help systems and the lack of caring on the side of people employed by the system.

Most importantly, tell us about how the system that you work for is designed to make people who need help dependant on the system. You don't help people and move them along their life. You help and ensure you create a dependance and your system works against independance.

Something breaks, you fix for free. There is no sense of ownership, so no sense of responsibility.

Help me understand my oversimplifications. I'm open to learning and listening if you help me out.
