We Texans are proud. After all, we don't have a state income tax, we don't have "town taxes", "view taxes", and outrageous amounts of government interference in our daily lives.
We are not all cowboys and cowgirls. In the greater Houston area we have people living here from all parts of the globe. Many of us care a great deal about the environment. Our family of four lives in a very energy efficient 1,100 square foot home. Yes, I said eleven hundred.
We are not all fans of Gov. Perry-he is just as much a windbag and a puppet of his political party as all the people he insults.
For a bit of perspective, it takes at least 15-18 hours by car to cross our state from the Gulf Coast west to New Mexico. We do not have the infastructure that smaller states do in order to facilitate public transportation. Unfortunately, we have to drive in private vehicles much of the time. Can we do better on work commutes- of course- will we? Who knows? The first time I visited New England I was shocked that we traveled through three states in 45 minutes by car! The excellent rail system and public transportation in large cities in New England states are easily accessible. Texas is much "younger" in our statehood. There are many things that must be done to help our state to become more environmentally concious.
I do agree that many people have been blind to the sobering facts of the global mess that we are in. Some are finally waking up. I think that all American citizens must help each other to be more responsible about the environment. After all, the famous "Don't mess with Texas" slogan was created by the Texas Department of Transportation to encourage citizens of our state not to litter.
Let's all spend more time on the facts than on mud slinging and perpetuating hackneyed stereotypes. We are all citizens of this nation. Let's work together rather than finger pointing and blaming.
