Great player. His side by side work with Hal Blaine on Jan & Dean & Spector stuff was great.

Earl was the man as far as drumming went. He forged the way for other African American studio musicians and was generous in his help to them. I knew Earl for several years back in the seventies. He was a fun person who had a very infectious sense of humor, was an exceptionally great musician and so professional. He is missed! Hearing him play on so many things on a daily basis, including "Cool Hand Luke" movie score by Lalo Schiffrin is poignant. RIP, Earl.

I knew Earl in the 50's. I was a teenager and was amazed seeing him play at Cosimo's studio. Earl was (without a doubt) the man that invented rock'n roll drumming. You should listen to "I Got It" with Little Richard....Earl was at his best.
He gave Fats Domino, Shirley and Lee, Little Richard and Dave Bartholomew hell. But every session he recorded was perfect. He will be missed. |
