Well I have nothing against Slatkin. He did subject his audiences to some terrible contemporary pieces, but that effort is hit or miss and it is important to try out new composers I think. But I am a very long time subscriber and the first major improvement, from a pretty mediocre ensembale, started long ago with Antal Dorati. Rostropovich really took it to a near top level and the comment by Slatkin that he took it past that -- I don't agree. Slatkin did replace a number of players who were at the end of their careers and he did a good job on that. I will say, however, that french horns were a disgrace until Slatkin. He did fix a major problem there. I am sorry to see him go, but I am disappointed that he couldn't do more given his previous record.
