Loved the series of books when I was a kid. Wish my daughter had appreciated them, though.
It's so nice how Mrs. Wilder wrote kindly of her father, rather than about the way he really was...a man who couldn't hold a job (hence the reason they moved all over the place, and were forced to work at and live in a hotel, instead of being homeless) was rarely home with the family, and would have been a drifter had he not had a family. We all canonize our loved ones as saints after they pass on, though, and maybe that's the way she preferred to remember him. It also makes for good children's books. |
