I wonder if you could help me with a Russian name, I would pronounce it as Schafranovich but I'm sure it is spelled more like Szchavranovich. Does the name sould familiar to you at all and could you give me a clue on how it might be spelled in Russian? I don't believe it is Polish, I think it is Russian. Thanks if you can help.

A name ending in vic isn't very common in Russia I think (you'll find a lot more names ending in ov). If I had to guess I would go for one of the countries that used to belong to Yugoslavia (Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia).
Could it be something like Savanović ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Du%C5%A1ko_Savan... )?

Hmm, here's another sports player (volleybal), who is from the Ukraine (moved to Israel with his parents), with a similar name : Shafranovich.

So, I guess the name could be Russian (ok, former Russian) as well.

Strange, my replay seems to be lost somewhere on the web? Hopefully, it's not because I used Russian words? So, I try again.
I think, it can be Russian/Ukrainian/wit-Russian Jewish .It shoud be pronounced as Shafranovich , most likely with accent on "o" - Shafran˛vich. It cames from word ша&#10 92;ра& #1085;, what means "saffron" and it should be spelled as Ша&#10 92;ра& #1085;ов ич.
But if the first letter pronounced not as "sh", but as french "j" it more like Polish, Czech, or , indeed,South-Slavian.
I hope, I could help you a little. If you or anybody else hier have questions or need translation from/to Russian - you are always welcome . I'll do it with the pleasure, but remember- you should suffer from English side of my translation ;)

All I know is he said his parents were from Russia and he seemed to spell his name with a z in it but when he pronounced it...I couldn't here a z. Maybe he has changed it to an easier spelling, like justpassingby mentioned. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Sh*t, I could write Russian letters, but it seems to be impossible to transfer it hier.
As I said, his name sounds to me as Jewish. Of course , in Russia all names are written using Russian alfabet. But, as you probably knows, Jews have 2 languages - idish and ivrit ( sorry, now I'm guessing about spelling of this words).Ivrit likes to be more old, using very specifically alfabet, like arabian.Idish is more modern , I suppose, it's like much to german.I have no idea about it's alfabet, may be that is the unswer. If Russian spelling really important for you, I can scan it to my PC and send par e-mail or other way, you prefer.

I think you are talking about Yidish and Hebrew? But maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, anything could have happened to this guy and I admit I was kind of hoping to find an obit. I have a feeling he would have legally changed his name. He never mentioned that he was Jewish and at the time I didn't think he was, he didn't go to private school or even to Hebrew school as far as I know. Now that I think of it, I knew very little about him we were teens and he lived with his mom, he said his Dad was dead. I just wanted to know how to spell his name...just looking for an obit.

Do you have a first name and an approximate age of the guy you're looking for ?
