It doesn't matter that this happened in Pittsburgh. Nursing home neglect, mistakes and abuse are common, as I know all too well. Someone very close to me spent over a year going between a very well-known hospital center, nursing homes (more than one) and assisted living homes. My story is fairly sensational, but I don't feel it is out of the ordinary. What it boils down to is that anyone in a nursing home/assisted living facility MUST have constant family involvement! Even bodily functions must be monitored because bowl impactions are common and, so is gangrene of the bowel.
Unfortunately, MOST people in these places are without visitors, especially from their families. When I heard some of the stories of residents, who are of diverse backgrounds (even lawyers and accountants), it made me see how apathetic our society is. So long as you are able-bodied, you can enjoy the holidays and be the center of attention. However, dare you get ill, after a certain period you will be warehoused until expiration.
How Christian (or whatever faith you worship)!
