'Iron Man' a lot of fun

Full story: Chicago Tribune

Surviving his own private Afghanistan hostage drama, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark returns home, as he terms it, "conflicted." You could say the same about "Iron Man," in which a war profiteer develops a ...

I can wait for me and the boys to see this movie this weekend. Nice to see Marvel bring the better more complex characters to the sliver screen.

Definitely going to be the summer of the superhero. Iron Man, Batman, The Hulk and Hellboy. This looks like one of the better ones.

hard to understand, poorly written review
I'm not an English major - but I found this article very difficult to read.
If your going to review movies, you don't have to write like some pompous French-man from upper crest society using big words that nobody knows, just speak normal English!
what the hell is louche? its not even in my thesaurus-
and how about "bandies the badinage" come on dude, you should be reviewing those stupid french movies that nobody cares about.

I used to read all the Iron Man comics when I was young and stupid. One of the better Marvel mags. Right up there with Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos.

Chicago T, perhaps http://www.merriam-webster.com/ will be useful for you:

louche: adjective
-- not reputable or decent

bandy: verb
-- 1: to bat (as a tennis ball) to and fro
-- 2 a: to toss from side to side or pass about from one to another often in a careless or inappropriate manner
-- 2 b: exchange; especially : to exchange (words) argumentatively
-- 2 c: to discuss lightly or banteringly
-- 2 d: to use in a glib or offhand manner

badinage: noun
-- playful repartee : banter

Michael, I found your review to be informative and helpful. Thanks!

I saw this movie tuesday night at a free screening. Well done movie, casting Robert Downey Jr was great, clearly the movie is going to require a sequel. It was good, not great.

Favreau said a few months ago that this movie was written to be the first of a trilogy. So don't expect everything to tie nice and neat.

Caught a sneak preview on Monday night and loved it. Comic fans will have a blast with all the references to the greater Marvel Universe. This was the first movie produced by Marvel and they're creative control shows. Hollywood has never seemed to understand that the comics are popular for a reason. The best comic book films, stay close to the source material and this one is by the book.

Terrence Howard's character is more than just a functional one. He's War Machine.

Also--watch for a Robert Downey Jr./Tony Stark appearance in the new Hulk movie.

This is the first time a review has changed my mind about possibly seeing a movie. I'm a Marvel fan, but not an Iron Man reader. And bluntly put, I'm even less of a Robert Downey, Jr., fan. Meh to that. Yet, with names like Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow and - dear, God! It's the Dude!- how can I stay away?(And that was not sarcasm but actual excitement.)

I have to agree - this review was extremely difficult to read. Not because of words like louche and badinage, but for the simple reason that it is poorly written.
"Surviving his own private Afghanistan hostage drama, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark returns home, as he terms it, "conflicted." You could say the same about "Iron Man," in which a war profiteer develops a conscience, an off-and-on politicized streak as well as a titanium alloy flying suit, with jets of flame shooting out of his palms."
Heh? Ouch. I'll see the movie anyway, but no thanks to this headache-inducing review.

I didn't think it an unlikely casting choice in the sense of Downy being unlikely, I thought it unlikely only because usually Hollyweird isn't that cool and daring. Downey was the main reason I'm willing to give it a chance.

I doubt this will be as good as The Dark Knight, but I am looking forward to it nonetheless. I was never a big Iron Man fan, but this sounds like fun time.

Give Jack Kirby his due: Jack "King" Kirby created Iron Man, not Stan Lee, Don Heck drew the first issue (Tales of Suspense #39), while Larry Lieber (Stan Lee's brother) scripted it -- all Stan did was plot it and I sort of think Kirby did that.

Downey was perfect!

Long live the King!!

The previews typically do not pull me in to the theatres, but, for some reason, these have. And I am going to see this movie, in the theatre and not wait for it to come to cable.

I amplify the positive accolades concerning Robert Downey, Jr.'s acting, humor and energy. Like Spiderman, this film is aimed at adults.
