He's been compared to stars like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and others, but if you ask his fans, nobody does old-time country quite like Merle Haggard.

I admit not all of Merle's songs touch me, though they reached number one on the charts nonetheless. Many of his tunes do allow me to see the difference in the sounds of country music during the 60's, 70's and 80's, compared to today's "run together songs and sounds." Why did country music have to change so drastically? Anyone who grew up country is certainly disappointed by the sounds of today's country music. Add a rock guitarist today and it all runs together after awhile and it is difficult to distinguish one band from another? And where are all of the credentials of most of today's players? Many of them never heard of or truly listened to the sounds or stories of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Red Sovine, Buck Owens, George Jones, Lefty Frizzell, etc. Country radio today is a huge disappointment when it prefers rock over country sounds. It's a huge disappointment.
